Default OWC 1.2 upgrade ok but thinking of returning it

I have the sawtooth 400 G4 and I upgraded to the OWC 1.2 proccesor
I havn't any complaints about the amount tracks and plugs etc. I'm getting
but play and stop are erratic... up to 30 second delays...if it starts at all
then I end up double clicking... this really sucks....
I am running Panther and have 750MB of ram. The G4 stock video card and a 2nd PCI
Radeon 7000 I am really not even using...also
and am running no automation currently. I have a Digi 001 so G5
is not an option. Where is the bottle neck here? Do I need a dual processor?
more ram? video card? or a faster bus G4 unit?
I got a 30 day window to return the OWC 1.2
anyone have any comments?

I'd start by losing the PCI video card if you aren't using it. It may be hogging PCI resources from your 001. Pull out the video card and see if there's any improvement before you yank the upgrade.

I would like to use 2nd monitor when tracking
I have one monitor in control room and 2nd one
in studio for when tracking and engineering myself.
On an additional note I have also have the dual SCSI
card PCI assembly from the beige 333MT plugged into the
PCI buss and a couple of ATA 7200 hard drives as well.
So the G4 is loaded.
right now I am experiencing this just trying to mix.
So do you think I would need to yank all the SCSI hard drives
too?
any other ideas?

Yikes, ErnestBliss! I have the same G4 400MHz system and was JUST talking to an OWC tech about this same upgrade yesterday. I also wanted to add the same video PCI card for the Apple Studio Display support (when/if I can ever afford the LCD...but that's the price of an 002r trade-in). I can't offer any help here, but I'll sure be watching to see if you can get this working well.

Best of luck!

Hmmm... not exactly sure what your issue might be-- there are a couple of possibilities-- I'd search around the DUC regarding possible SCSI issues with OSX. Is the SCSI card PT compatible?

If you pull the cards out, you can always put them back in if their not the prob. At least you can narrow down the issue possibly. With the amount of stuff you have packed into that machine, I'd be most concerned about overheating issues with the dual upgrade (even though it has it's own fan) and the stock fans-- there's a lot of stuff to cool there.

On the video note, it's *always* better to run your graphics cards out of the AGP slot -- not PCI-- you'll get far better performance. I have a Radeon 9000 Pro which supposedly supports running 2 monitors off the same card-- I have yet to try it, however I know there are others on this board that do. You may have the non-AGP, PCI graphics version though, in which case, you have no choice (though I'm pretty sure only the 350's were PCI graphics).

Another thing to note, though the AGP video cards support the Apple Studio LCD's-- older macs (such as the sawtooth models *DO NOT*. The AGP slot where the card plugs in to draw power to power the LCD's does not exist in older models. You can hook up other LCD displays though. The PCI version might be different.

True, but I believe Apple is making an adaptor now that deals with this issue.

So I take it that no one else out there is having these kinds of start stop issues with a similar upgrade.
Mind you I am running approx 20 tracks, 3 delays, 2 d-verbs, a channel strip or two and a Maxim.
Note there is eq and or compression on 3/4's of the tracks two. I havn't got any errors yet just the damn start delay that is driving me nuts. I pick out a spot I want to fine tune the mix on and I want to hear it when I push go
you dig? The digi 001 seems to work fine when tracking...usually tracking 12 inputs at once.
as far as SCSI being certified by Digi....I don't know but it is stock apple from the beige G3 333MT.

I can start pulling a bunch of stuff out.. and screw with it but it will seem more like a downgrade than an upgrade
if . Like I said I got no errors...start and stop seems like it might be more like a slow bus issue...I'll move the tune to a different hard drive and see what happens. I'm thinking I'd like to throw Reason into the mix one day too
the system just don't seem up for it though.

Something to try.

Go to Pref.>Operation> set record allocation to 20 min.
Uncheck Use all available space.

This probably isn't it--since you're running a single rather than dual upgrade---but perhaps you are drawing too much voltage for your power supply. Unplug a couple of cards and/or hard disks. You might have to let things cool down a bit ( sounds stupid, but it worked for me) and then try running the session. Worth a shot. At least you'll know if power is an issue.

This seems to have fixed the problem
