Default What do you use for noise reduction?

Hi,

I was wondering if someone has some usefull tips in noise reduction.

I work in a postproduction house where they only do reality shows. I got a lot of questions from the directors if it is possible to "get rid of that noise so we can here what they are saying"

I know plugins like BNR, but maybe there are other plugs on the market?

Thanks, David

Sure! Check out the Waves X-Noise Bundle (www.waves.com) or Bias Inc.'s SoundSoap Pro (www.bias-inc.com) or Sonic NoNoise (available at the Digistore).

I know all of them and must say Soundsoap Pro is really good at removing noise (it seems even better at it than Waves). And it's priced reasonably...

But check it out yourself. Good luck!

I do it with waves X-noise, but sometime it's not enough. At one time I had a Expander (for removing room reverberation), Waves Q10 EQ (for some specific room noise), X-noise, Aural Exciter (to help that lady voice a little bit).

It's a long process, but if you save your plug-in settings, you can reapplied them when you end up with a new scene of the same interview that you corrected 2 weeks ago.

Try to have all the take played at the same level, so your not trying to remove noise that is to low to to ear normally. I also try to take frequent breaks when I have a long show to restore, because if I don't I have trouble to figure out where I need to remove noise and where I don't.

Also those plug-ins induce a lot of delay (8000 or so samples). You will have to compensate manually for that since it's more than what Pro Tools can do.

I have seen a demo of a Cedar box , very expensive, but it do the job.

JC

P.S. You will be seen as a hero after you restored some stuff, then the producer will begin to think that they don't need to check the sound when filming because you can repair it....

I also recommend the X-noise bundle from Waves, I used it the other day and it worked great and only took about 5 min.
If your using sound forge you might also want to consider the noise reduction plugin. Ive used that before i got the waves bundle and got some good results with it. I cant remember the cost of it tho.

Cheers,
Ruben

Cedar .. GREAT
X-Noise ... Good, but like DINR ... Use carefully
I really like Waves C-4

All of these require LOTS of practice .. It's not automatic!

I agree entirely with todd- It takes a lot of practice...and that the CEDAR is terrific

that being said, the Sonic NoNoise plugin set is really good- I would say it is the best except for two things-

there is new stuff coming out soon, and each plugin has particular strengths-

If you can have more than one, of the stuff available today- the Sonic and Waves packages are your best bet- and for the love of the world try C4- It is pretty amazing.

You might tell the directors to hire a real sound engineer

..oh, you are serious... Don't forget about sidechaining the C1 or doubling up the track out of phase and eq'n only what you want to hear on one of the tracks. If this requires serious noise reduction for the final cut before it will be accepted, load the Waves X-Noise demo and bill the client for delivering such a lousy source file.

We also have the Cedar DNS1000. This box is awesome, very little artifacts. Waves X-Noise is also very good.
