Exclamation Digi 002 static/distortion from Monitor Outputs and Headphone jack

Greetings, all! I am hoping for some sage advice before I drop unnecessary $$$ on any "repairs" to my beloved Digi 002.

Recently I imported a professionally-mastered dance music mix into a Pro Tools LE 8.0.5 session for playback. I use an iMac with 12GB RAM, and external FW 800 LaCie drives connected to my Digi 002. The monitor outs of my 002 patch into Genelec 8030A speakers which route to a Genelec 7050B sub-woofer; I use balanced Mogami cable throughout the chain.

The mix I imported is hot and very punchy throughout, given the musical style. However, playback is very distorted in parts of the mix in which the VU meters hit the orange range (note, however, the mix never clips in the red). This distortion noise is audible from the Genelec speakers connected to the Digi 002 monitor outs, AND from the Digi 002's headphone output. The noise is reminiscent of signal headroom being overdriven or maxed out.

I checked the audio file in iTunes using the mini-jack analog headphone out of my iMac and the iMac's built-in audio driver, and there was no problem with noise distortion. However, when I switched to the Digi CoreAudio Manager 8.0.5 to play iTunes through my Digi 002/Genelecs and the 002's Headphone Out, the distortion was again present. I likewise checked the mix file in Peak, through both the iMac's built-in drivers and the Digi CoreAudio Manager; once again, the mix played with NO distortion using the built-in iMac driver, but distorted when played through the Digi CoreAudio Manager 8.0.5 and the 002.

I have played and inspected the mix file on several other systems, and there is absolutely no distortion in the audio file itself. I swapped out all the firewire and analog cables in my rig, but that made no difference. I tried different Pro Tools Playback/Buffer settings, but none of that helped. I hooked the Digi 002 up to a PowerBook running Pro Tools LE (8.0.3), iTunes, and Peak Pro, and the exact same phenomenon occurred: Distortion was present in the Monitor Outs and Headphone Out of the Digi 002, but NOT present when the CPU's built-in driver was used.

I have been researching this issue for several days, and am stumped. The only guess I have is that MAYBE this problem is connected to the Digi 002 power supply wiring harness issue, though I'm not sure that would cause the noise I’m describing. Also, my 002's serial number ends in a “G,” which I think means it does not have the faulty wiring harness (I bought the unit in March of 2006).

In any event, it seems clear that this is either a hardware issue with my Digi 002, or possibly a software driver glitch; it certainly is NOT an issue with the audio file itself or any other component of my rig. Is anyone aware of headroom issues involving the Digi 002's converters, etc.? Any thoughts, suggestions or referrals would be most appreciated—many thanks!

Does it play other files fine? It still sounds like some odd file related issue. Or. clocking issue.

Cool Re: Digi 002 static/distortion from Monitor Outputs and Headphone jack

In Peak Pro, I did notice transient peaks in a similar file (with a lot of bass) presented with audible distortion in either the left or right channel when playback occurred from the opposite channel. So, for example, if I just played back the right channel of the stereo mix, I would hear a static distortion sound in the left headphone.

Anyone from Avid or the old Digidesign group have any thoughts about the 002 hardware?

The part about showing peaks on one channel and playing with distortion on the other has me wondering if resetting the IO to its defaults in the Prefs might not sort that out.

Also the question begs to be asked. Could this simply be dirty pots? It happens.
