Default 2021.7, beachballs and slowdowns on various Mac OS - SOLVED?

I've been experiencing the same problems as a lot of people with 2021.7, can't guarantee that this fix will work for everyone, but for now it seems to have worked for me. Please ignore this if you are not a Waves user.

I reached out to Waves after simply removing my v12 WaveShell plugins from the Avid Plug-ins Folder fixed the problem. Their Tech Support got back to me today, and ran me through the complete reinstall process, and after a brief check on a session that was previously getting a lot of beachballs it seems to have improved things. I will update this post after a solid day's work.

Here is the process for complete uninstall/reinstall as provided by Waves Support.

Thank you for contacting Waves Tech Support.

The issue could be related to the corrupted installation/leftover files from the previous versions. Let's try reinstalling Waves plugins from scratch and see if the issue persists:

First, uninstall:
Launch Waves Central.
Go to the Settings page in the bottom left corner.
Under Maintenance, look for Uninstall and click the drop-down menu.
Checkmark all the available version entries and click Uninstall.
Once done, go to Applications and remove the Waves folder and the Waves Central application.
In Finder, click on the Go menu while holding down [Alt/Option], click on Library > Preferences and send the Waves Preferences to the trash.
In the same Library folder, go to Caches and send the Waves folder to the trash.
Go to Macintosh HD > Library > Application Support and send the Waves folder to the trash.
Delete any WaveShell files you find in the following locations (if exist):
Mac HD > Library > Audio > Plugins > Components
Mac HD > Library > Audio > Plugins > VST
Mac HD > Library > Audio > Plugins > VST3
Mac HD > Library > Application Support > Digidesign > Plugins
Mac HD > Library > Application Support > Avid > Audio > Plug-Ins
Mac HD > Library > Audio > Plugins > WPAPI

Now to re-install:
Download and install Central.
Run Central and log in.
Go to the Install Products page in the top left corner.
Under My Products, checkmark the products you wish to install.
Click Install on the bottom right.

Once done, relaunch Pro Tools and see if the issue persists.

Cheers,
Nathan

Thanks!

Curious, did you re-install v12 after uninstalling? If so, are you experiencing the SWOD’s?

Yes, re-installed v12.7

No beachballs except when using Waves (new) drop down menu for presets on plugins.

Still feels a bit sluggish but much much better.

I'm in ongoing correspondence with their support team, they have mentioned that Waves v11 also had issues with Graphical Threading. They also provided a long-winded method for disabling this at a plug-in code level that I am really not keen to attempt - that's their job not mine!

Ha ha. Figures.
Do you have those instructions by chance?

I’m not sold on dropping down to v11 as that might create more issues with not being Bug Sur qualified.

I might just uninstall and re-install v12 and see what happens.
Thanks.

Hi Nathan,

Thank you for the update.

This issue could be related to the plugin's refresh rate.

We've encountered sluggish behavior in Pro Tools when some V11 plugins are inserted, it can be resolved by disabling the plugin’s graphic threading.

Which version of plugins do you use? You can verify it by clicking on the (W) logo in the upper left corner of the plugin's GUI.
Does the issue occur in other DAWs (Logic, Reaper, etc)?

So far I’ve seen this happen with VU Meter, Dorrough, Abbey Road Vinyl, CLA MixDown, Aphex, and Smack Attack – but I assume this may happen with other plugins as well.

If you are running V11 plugins, please, follow these steps to disable Graphic Threading:
Quit Pro Tools.
Go to Applications > Waves > Plug-Ins V11.
Right-click on the plugin that's causing issues and click on Open package contents.
Go to Contents > Resources> AlgXML.
Right-click on 1001.xml and Open With > TextEdit.
Delete the following line: <OptimalRefreshRate>100</OptimalRefreshRate>
• Note that in certain plugins, this line shows more than once - make sure to delete all instances of it.
Save the file.
Launch Pro Tools and make sure the plugin is now working.

Oh. So this is only for v11 plugins.

Thanks for sharing.

OK, further developments... Waves Support offered to remote in to my machine, (which I allowed) and their tech fixed permissions on a whole bunch of files. Now everything is running smoothly. Best thing for others having this problem would be to reach out to Waves Support and let them do the same.*

I asked the tech if this was a consistent issue but he said different OS's and Mac hardware configurations can have different problems. Anyway, my Pro Tools and Waves plug ins are now working smoothly and as expected :)

*I think only current update plan customers can get this service though.

PS Please note NO CLEAN OS REINSTALL REQUIRED!!!!!!!
