Default Error Message

Hello,

When I click on a track I get this message:

Could not complete your request because Assertion in "/Users/autobld/gitlabci/PT/release/2021/r2/ProTools/NewFileLibs/SMgr/UAutoPlayList.cpp", line 6105.

What does this mean?

Thanks.

When you get an assert error you should google for that error message.

Like google for the terms

Pro Tools "UAutoPlayList.cpp"

The quotes around UAutoPlayList.cpp force Google to only return results that mention that file name. And since there is not likely to be many other mentions on the Web of that name (or other of these Pro Tools C++ source code file names that turn up in ASSERT errors) it's likely to turn up helpful results. Don't include the whole file path, that adds noise and reduces the quality of the search. And don't include the line number (see below).

When you Google that you will find a few posts, try what they did and see if it helps or not (I'd esp. try changing tick/sample that is mentioned somewhere... and I'd guess in that case they may have had a corrupt session), if not be sure to state what exactly you tried. You've already tried trashing prefs right? Before posting here.

And if it's a corrupt session you may need to try importing stuff into a new session or maybe deleting that track/playlist and even clips on it.

An ASSERT is a code macro that developers put into the code to assert something is the way they expect, like say some variable is always positive, or some array has no more than some number of entries etc. If the ASSERT fails the application deliberately crashes with one of these errors. Think if it as a last line of error checking used by developers. The line number and file and path info in the crash report is describing to the developer where the ASSERT that failed is in *their* source code/build system. It's not talking about a file on your computer. And the line number may not be useful, the same ASSERT with the same cause may report different line numbers across different Pro Tools releases.

Nice to see Avid uses Gitlab Good stuff. But oh well the assert error message does somewhat help focus anybody intent on trying to steal source code :-O
