Default terms.... "root folder"... etc

terms......"root folder"...etc

these terms i keep running across in the user reference manual........are things like......."root directory/directory"........."start-up volume"........"root folder"......"dedicated audio drive"........"partitioning"......... and....."fragmentation"

to be honest.......the one thing that i am looking to find out more than anything is how to reduce fragmentation on my hard-drive.......i do understand that fragmentation......(causing the hard-drive to "skip around" too much)......is not a good thing......and i've already been advised against partitioning the hard-drive.....so how can i begin now to avoid the likelihood of this happening??
