I always thought PT First had one use - learning how to use Pro Tools. So in that sense, a shame it has gone.

More so Avid is better off without First, so I hope this is real. It was terribly supported product and built on incompatible projects formats and unreliable cloud storage, and missing basic plugins for many beginners/music creators...with the result it looks pathetic against GarageBand or Logic or Live or ... It was like somebody in Avid management was busy ticking boxes trying to copy Adobe cloud and nobody in charge understood this technology enough. The end result tarnished Avid's reputation when it needed the reverse. The whole chase the low-end to build a market for established software companies frequently fails. Heck Adobe got out of many low end products and low end bundles long long ago, it's not even like Avid tried to copy the best parts of what Adobe did. (disclosure, a long time ago I helped bring Adobe InDesign to market). I just hope Avid focuses on pouring love and care into Pro Tools standard and ultimate DAWs, prioritizes stability, focuses on addressing frequent feature requests, nails the transition to Apple Silicon and don't get distracted with trying to add bloatware around the core DAW. I thought the moves to include the complete plugin bundle with Pro Tools subscription and perpetual licenses was a very good move, there is great stuff in those plugin bundles and it's better that many more Pro Tools users have them available, for users and for Avid.

Edit: but one thing here that is not good is the timing. Coming at the end of the consumer/Christmas sale period. Would have been much better for Avid to kill First or (or only First sale bundles?) early in the year in a quiet period. And ugh why can't Avid and Mackie coordinate messaging on this, does leaves the impression that maybe Mackie have pushed this announcement out because they are pissed off with Avid.

Here goes. I don’t want it to seem like cat and mouse, but avid was bragging towards the end of it’s artist community. I’ve tried protools first, and it’s entirely cloud based. You have to save on the cloud. Less artists without it. Less protools operators as well especially with the extraordinary hardware based price tag.

Except it was missing major parts of the Pro Tools workflow (no clip bin!).
It got neutered into something that was so abstract from actual Pro Tools.

I NEVER understood why they did that. What purpose did it serve aside from rendering the application almost useless?

You essentially had to leave any edited clips along the timeline if you wanted to access them again. WTF?

Oh I didn't realise that, fair enough.

I guess now they want people to rent to learn PT, and education versions are half price. Could be worse.

Glad to see it go The free 30-day demo is a much better idea. If Avid wants something to tease/tempt new users, I would go back to the Pro Tools Free concept with all features intact but limit it to 16 audio tracks and 2 live inputs.
