I just ran a basic test on this feature - no major differences as yet....

I supposed I'll have to keep working on large sessions to be able to tell.

If you have 4GB of installed RAM and are running a large address aware version of Pro Tools, such as 8 and up... The 3GB switch will allow Pro Tools to access about 2.7 GB of RAM as opposed to about1.7GB without it.

Will this make a difference in windows 7, 64 bit if you have 8 GB of ram. I am unsure how PT works with 64bit but adobe programs say they have 4gb available when I start them. Just curious

NO. The /3GB switch is not for your 64 bit system.

Specifically, the /3GB switch is not supported for your 64-bit system because it is not needed. (i.e. it already allows 3GB+ executables) I've run 8.0.3 with executable sizes up to around 4GB without a problem on Win7-64.

There were two halves to the /3Gb switch. The first was the program itself. If it wasn't specifically compiled to allow more than 2Gb of address space, then that was the limitation, /3Gb switch or not. If it was compiled to allow extended address space, then you could exceed the 2Gb limit if the /3Gb switch was specified in the boot.ini.

This is all moot with 8.0.3 on Win-7 64. 8.0.3 is still a 32-bit app, so 4Gb is the limit.

If you have VST plugins that need more space, take a look at jBridge. It allows the plugins to run in their own memory space.
