Upgrading from M-powered 7.1 to 8 (educational)

Hello all. Does anyone know if I would have any trouble upgrading from M-powered 7.1 (standard, not educational) to M-powered 8 educational? I recently finally bought a new computer and of course it runs Windows 7 so I figured I may as well go ahead and upgrade Pro Tools, but I'm trying to do it as cheaply as possible.

#1 There is no education version, its a "Educational discount" and the software you get is identical to the standard edition. They just place a sticker on the standard version that say's "Educational".

#2 Pro tools does not have a educational upgrade from 7.1 to 8.0. All they have is the standard upgrade which cost $150. I went through this and had to pay the full amount.


You have three "Educational" options listed below.

For $180 you can cross grade to PT9!!!

For $150 you could also buy another copy of Pt8 m-powered.

For $150 you could buy a upgrade from Pt7 to pt8(standard no ed. version)

Thanks for the incredibly helpful info tribedescribe! You very simply outlined my options - which though I've done tons of googling, I couldn't quite get my options distilled so simply haha.

Wow, so from where I stand there's only a $30 difference b/t 8 m-powered and 9. Have you made the leap to 9 already, and do you think I should just skip over 8 then?

Yes I made the switch to PT9 about a month ago. Overall it feels like m-powered, but it has some extra option which are worth it. Like:


MP3 option
extra tracks/buses/midi
use of any audio interface
acd
ocd file exchange
adc

most important to me was the ADC and the open audio interface options. I got mine from Academic superstore.
