Every time you increase the sampling rate in which you are recording, you also increase the amount of processing power/disk space required to run a session. It takes double the CPU power to run a reverb at 96k as it does 48k. You need to ask yourself why do you need to record at such a high rate? If you are going to CD or even MP3 you could argue its not worth the hit taken on your system.

At 96k, you will not be able to run as many tracks with plugins as well as the possibility of needing two drives for one session if it gets large.

The Buffer? You take some pressure off the CPU when you increase the buffer. Thats why it can now run at a higher setting, useless for tracking but for mixing is fine.

If you must record at 96k...try turning off as many plugins as possible and lower the buffer until you find a sweet spot.

Or try Low Latency Monitoring when you are recording. All plug-ins will be put in bypass.

Cheers,
