Limiting the velocity range of a midi performance
I wanna restrict or compress the velocity range of a performance. Is there any way to do this.
Example: When I play a piano part and record midi, because my playing is not the best, I have a pretty big difference in velocity, from the softest played notes to the loudest. Is there some way I can adjust the lowest and highest values that will be played. Like setting a range from 80-100. So playing anything below 80 will move it up accordingly with in the range, and anything above 100 will be moved down. I know I can go into velocities and edit them after the performance is done. I was looking for a way to have this happen automaticaly, or with a few preference changes. I'm using PT 7.4cs8 Thanks!! Nick

Re: Limiting the velocity range of a midi performance
Take a look at the MIDI Realtime Properties.. I don't remember if it'll do exactly what you are looking for, but you can definitely manipulate the velocity in different ways.. One you are happy with the settings, you can write it to the track.
Another way to do this depends on your controller. My StudioLogic Controller allows certain curves to be applied to the velocity that can have a similar effect to what you are trying to do (in the world of RC airplanes, it would be called "adding exponential" to an axis's control stick). If you have a capable controller, it might offer even more refinements to velocity control..

Re: Limiting the velocity range of a midi performance
See "Event Operations," Chapter 39, in the Pro Tools Reference Guide, specifically "Change Velocity" on page 812. Perhaps you could start by trying to "scale" the MIDI selection by 100%. When you choose "Scale by," you will also be able to limit the velocities to a minimum and maximum.

Re: Limiting the velocity range of a midi performance
Track-Based MIDI Real-Time Properties Velocity is non-destructive and IMO is the best method. Event Operation>Change Velocity is destructive and will need a Restore Performance operation and even maybe a Flatten Performance operation.

Man... you MIDI guys are great!
Thanks so much for sending lots of good info, so fast! I really do appreciate it fellas!! I will give these a try in about 20 minutes. I can hear my Velvet calling. Can't wait... Nick

Re: Limiting the velocity range of a midi performance
Don't know about Velvet but Midi Grand (and some others) actually have a velocity sensitivity control built in.

Re: Limiting the velocity range of a midi performance
Velvet does have one. I just got the software and I found the midi feature after messing around with it for a few.
When I was tracking earlier I was taking midi data out of a Roland Rhodes MK-60, and the velocities were all over the place. Now that I got his new software and can phase out my Rhodes. I noticed you mentioned midi Grand. Which software are you using and how do you like it. I'm slowly getting all the best synths to cover all the classic keyboard models. I have my Hammond Organ replaced with the B4II from NI, and I have Velvet from Digi to take care of my EPs. Now I just need a grand sound. Any thoughts? Thanks so much!!!
