Well of course there are no set-in-stone rules, but find what chord is being playing right when the first verse starts. It is probably the same as what the song ends on, if there is not a dramatic key change in the song. That would point to the key of the song.

If you find the first chord of a verse (let's say it is "A"), then play a scale for that note, see if it fits the song. If it does, you have the key.

The key is the one whose scale most easily accommodates the melody of the song.

You can also try playing a single note ALL the time throughout the song. If it doesn't sound bad anywhere then it will probably be the key you're in.
If you're unsure as to the simple relationship between major and minor keys (eg C major and Aminor), find a basic book on music theory which will surely enlighten.

Hope this helps

Not completely true, because that "right" note could be the 3rd or the 5th of the key's chord. Well, it depends on the song: the fastest way could be to locate the main chord at the start of the first verse (Intro's often is a chord series that resolve to the main key - then skip it). It could be easier if you listen to the bass first note of the verse (hoping it's playing the tonic....). Very difficult to explain by words: music theory is 50/50 science/experience then I suggest you to take some lessons (espacially harmony, if you only need to learn about chords). You should study at least the basic elements of a particular key (notes, chord(s) and so on)

It also depends on the genre: mainstream songs are generally easier in key's recognize for non-expert listeners. A Byork's song could be more difficult.... (well, depends on which song)
