Problem with panning mono and stereo tracks in Pro Tools 12
I have been using Pro Tools 12 for a couple of months now and recently I have encountered a problem with recently created projects. It relates to both stereo and mono tracks. If I have a mono track panned centre it sounds fine and if I pan it full right it sounds fine but when I go to pan it full left the track loses level and tone. Sounding muffled. If I pan it to 50 left it will lose level but will sound as if it is still coming out of the right speaker.
This also applies to stereo tracks. Panned 100L and 100R sound fine but panning them both hard left the track loses level and tone and becomes muffled. This problem does not occur on older projects. I am using an RME Babyface with their Total Mix software. Any help would be appreciated. Cheers |

Re: Problem with panning mono and stereo tracks in Pro Tools 12
Hi there,
I've been using PT12 for a while now. Never seen this problem. Create a new session. Mono aux track, insert the signal generator plugin, set to pink noise. If panning to the left makes it muffled, it should now clearly be audible. If the problem persists, create a master fader. Watch the MF level meter as you pan the noise. Is there a level loss on the left? Chances are the MF shows the same level whether you pan L and R. Check the Total Mix software. Do the meters read correct level? Any plugins active there? If so bypass all. If the problem occurs only with specific sessions, check all subgroup and master processing. There could be a stereo-unlinked multi-mono plugin sitting around with messed up settings on one side maybe? Other thoughts: create a new default total mix setup. Check the io setup for any odd routing. Route the signals to another stereo out (eg 3-4). Same problem? Check all leads between the interface and the speakers. Both tweeters working flawlessly? When you play music from iTunes, do you have the same issue? Maybe turn one speaker off at a time just to double check? Swap the speaker leads so that L plays to R and vice versa, does the muffled sound stay on the same speaker? Hope this help. Let us know what it was once you've worked it out. Best, Jan

Re: Problem with panning mono and stereo tracks in Pro Tools 12
Hi Jan,
Thanks for the response. I have done what you said and with the pink noise there was a distinct difference in the left and right channel. The left being muffled. Swapped the speakers channels around and the left speaker was different. I then had a listen using headphones and the right and left channel were the same. It must be a recent thing and looks definitley like it may be a tweeter issue. Thanks for your assistance, much appreciated. Michael |
