Default Storage Q's - Mix - IDE vs SCSI? Magma vs MDD?

So, I see in the Mix compatibility archives that 32 Tracks are supported via 1 IDE HDD, and 64 via 2 SCSI Drives....

Just wondering..... Can I reasonably expect recording 48 to be stable on one drive?
Like a 500GB or 1TB IDE 16MB Cache 7200 RPM with Disk allocation at 240 minutes? Or maybe if I go to a 10.5K RPM ?

I know there's a lot of stuff that works fine that isn't supported,
but my main concern is stability.

I also have the ATTO ExpressPCI UL3D SCSI Card and the Magma 13 Slot

I'm trying to decide which is the best route for storage....

IDE in the MDD?
ATTO and Glyph via MDD?
ATTO and Glyph via Magma?
IDE or SATA via PCI Card in MDD?
IDE or SATA via PCI Card in Magma?

Not sure which will give me best disk performance -vs- least PCI Bandwidth against the Magma/Mix Cards

??????????

Any input???????

I'd like to save some troubleshooting time, and only buy HDD's once....

I've read as much as I could find on Digi's site, but nothing that really indicated the best route

Keep in mind this system (6 888's, MTPAV/USD, MDD Dual 1.25, Magma 13 Slot, 2 Mix Cores, 2 DSP Farms) is strictly used for Live Recording of 48 Channels at 24/48 and usually 4 hrs a crack.

I set Disk allocation to 240 minutes... 4 hrs....

I'd like to stick to a single audio drive if stable.... But I don't know ??

PT cards in chassis
Atto in MDD
Seagate Cheetah 15K RPM SCSI drive in MDD
I used to run Mix+6, now running HD3+1

48 tracks no sweat.

I do this every now and then for 32-64 tracks. I use a single SATA hard drive for recording, a 74GB WD Raptor which is a 10krpm drive. It supports 64 tracks easily even at 96k. I "only" record roughly 2 hours but I don't see how 4 hours would be any different.

You should try that single Cheetah! Set up a dummy session and record silence for 4 hours and see if it hiccups or not. If you can make it 3 times a row, perhaps you can trust it does it, right?

48 Tracks at 24/48 will not fit on that small of a drive :)

It eats something like 80 or 90 GB with disk allocation at 240 Minutes.

I need to get at least a 250GB to be comfortable.... I wanna have plenty of free drive space on it.

I've been able to record 48 of silence for the full 240 Minutes 4 times now.

I think a real good reliability test will be rippin all 48 at 24/48 for 480 Minutes.... 8 Hours....
If it'll do that, then I can be pretty comfortable with using it for 4 Hr live work.
I really need it to be rock solid.

Seems stable.

I have my Buffers, CPU Limit, everything maxed out.
(Latency won't be an issue as this is for live recording with no monitoring back to the talent.)

I hit about 30% PCI and 20-25% Disk, not even a sliver on CPU
That's with just the Mix cards in Chassis, and Host card and USB card in MDD
Audio drive is a 120GB 7200RPM WD on the 100/133MHz Bus internally in the MDD

I was just curious about a HBA (Like my ATTO ExpressPCI cause I thought maybe the bus speed is faster that way)

I guess my final Q's tho.....

I found the manual for the Expansion chassis and it shows the last 3 slots available for Non-Bus Master cards......
Would this be things such as my ATTO?
Is the Expansion Chassis Dual Channel off the single host card?

I can't find any detailed slot info on the MDD Dual 1.25 FW400....
I want to know if all the slots are on the same bus or not......
Anybody know where to find this info?

I'll try tonight with the ATTO Running 4 37GB 10,500 RPM Barracudas in a rack array I have and see how it likes it...

I want my HDD's Hot/Warm swappable and accessable without having to remove anything from the rack..... So I don't want the drive mounted inside the Magma or MDD

You can't record much longer than 4 hours, the WAV file size limit comes into your way soon after. Did you know about it? If not, then please take that into consideration; you will need a planned "reel change pause" if your show lasts longer.

Hmmmmmm.... Ok, didn't know

I don't see more than 4 hr live sessions. Not without the ability to 'change over'....

I just figured if it can do far more than I need it to, I can be comfortable with the 4

Seems like it does it fine, I just want to make sure I have the most efficient storage method utilized..... maybe I should get a SATA PCI card and run a SSD hahahahaaaa

BTW RIPPLE!!!! Thanx for the response... I'm not shrugging you off.... good info, I just want to understand the bus configs.... I'm not much of a Mac guy, and the Magma manual doesn't say anything about bus or channel info... not that I saw... just reference to non bus master....
