Designating Drives as Record volumes

This is weird. I have been running 2 500G Seagate Barracuda drives through the X33 port on my MacBook Pro. The interface is a SeriTek/2SM2. It was awesome, very fast. I use one drive for audio and the other for SFX and Video storage and playback. It worked great until I upgraded to 7.4. Now
Pro Tools will not allow me to change the the drive assignments from transfer to playback, or to record for that matter. Both drives are formatted correctly, i.e. OS Extended (journaled). My drive enclosure have the correct Oxford chipsets. I have trashed prefences and data bases but I still can't open any files in PT. Any Ideas?
Digi says to do all of the above and I've done it. Would it help to transfer all the files to another drive and then re-format? I really don't want to go back to 7.3.1, as I think the elastic audio function of 7.4 could be really useful in my work. (same problem when trying FW 800.)

Reformatting the HDs is the only thing I can think of. Certainly that seems to have been the solution for other users with the same problem. If you do go down this route, I'd recommend one of the more stringent options like a 7 pass.

When you deleted the databases, did you also delete the Databases folder on your system drive under Library/Application Support/Digidesign/? If not delete that along with the database files in the root directory of each of the drives. Check the trouble shooting thread for confirmation of location.

Thanks for your input. Yes, I deleted all databases. Reformatted my drives (OS Extended(journaled)).
That was a time consuming endeavor for sure. Still, I got the message "Sata cannot be designated as an
audio playback volume because it is not a fixed, removable, or media net volume". I could not change drive designations in the work space browser.
I un-installed 7.4 and re-installed 7.3.1, now everything works fine. The drives are seen and designated as record drives. I didn't even have to change it in the WS browser because they just came up that way. This must be some compatibility problem with the Mac. (MacBook Pro 2.16 dual core) Or what?
Another thing I noticed with 7.4, though minor, was that the lockout shuffle mode function that I used in 7.3.1 was not functional . Really strange. Can I get my $49 upgrade fee back. LOL. I'm just happy that I'm up and running again. Thanks guys.

I have the same exact setup and had the same problem after repairing the permissions on the system drive. I had to uninstall PT first, then delete all the prefs and db's on each drive. After re-installing PT again everything started working again. I never had to reformat any of the drives. Granted I'm not running 7.4 yet but that's what worked for me. I tried a few times but it was doing it in this specific order that was able to get it working:

1. uninstall PT

2. trash all prefs

3. trash all db's

4. re-install PT

I'm excited about going to 7.4 so I really hope this helps.

I would be interested in what happens when you bump up to 7.4. I couldn't make it work, even though I went through the exact same steps as you. Very frustrating. I've gone back to 7.3.1 and all is well.
Elastic audio will have to wait.

Sorry to hear it didn't work. I should be going to 7.4 sometime in the next few weeks. I love the eSATA for other things like video editing and it's going to be a big letdown if it's not going to work for PT as well. I'll be sure to post the results.
