Default MIDI : Routing one track to two channels?

MY SITUATION
•*I'm using the Drumkit from Hell via Reason/NN-XT
•*I've loaded the Close and Room kits into two separate NN-XT's
• I do NOT want to maintain two tracks of MIDI in PT, sending one to the Close kit, and to the Room

MY QUESTION
Is there a way to maintain one track of MIDI out of PT, and have it hit both samplers in Reason?

I've searched the forums here and found nothing. Any advice is most appreciated!

Try this: first make two separate midi tracks on two channels, input your notes etc., then use COPY - PASTE MERGE and combine the two tracks. This puts the two tracks on one, but unfortunately the midi events list doesn't show channel info, so I don't know if the merged notes keep their original channel assignment. Anyway merging and demerging midi tracks have been a natural feature in most soft sequencers for at least 15 years, so PT ought to have included it.

Good luck!

I think this does the opposite of what I want to do, which is to send one track of MIDI to two different samplers in Reason...

Hi Mux,

No, - actually the point of merging midi tracks is that you could have upto 16 channels of midi sitting on one and the same midi track in your sequencer, just what you are after. This is in fact what you do in one of the midi file formats (0 or 1, I never remember which one). And the point of demerging is that you can split those channels again onto separate tracks, one for each midi channel. But as I said, I am not sure whether PTLE can actually do this. It may as I suggested above, check it out if you please.

Maybe I misunderstood your question ("...one track to two channels")? If you simply want to send the same midi notes from one track to two separate instruments on the same channel, you just assign the same midi channel to both instruments, that should do the trick.

Cheers!

Exactly! But how do I do that?

My MIDI track in PT has one send (as far as I know), so I hit the pulldown and see my Reason modules, and I can only select one.

What am I missing?

Hold down the Control key to do multiple output assignments in Pro Tools.

Rail really knows his stuff. There are all sorts of cool things like that that are hidden under the surface in PT. I highly recommend reading through the manual just for fun even when you aren't looking for something in particular. Don't forget, audio tracks can have multiple outs selected also, its not just for midi tracks.

I couldn't get this to work until I read the manual. Rail only left out one little detail: Hold the control key down BEFORE you click the MIDI Out Selector. It's not like a web pulldown, where you open it, then press control and make your selections.

And here's the relevant info from page 175 of the ProTools 6 manual:

"To assign multiple destinations to a single
MIDI track, Start-click (Windows) or Controlclick
(Macintosh) the MIDI Output Selector and
select additional channels from any device.
When multiple destinations are selected for a
single MIDI track, a “*” sign will appear next to
the first destination name in the track’s MIDI
Output Selector on Windows and Mac OS X,
and a “+” sign will appear next to the first destination
name in the track’s MIDI Output Selector
on Mac OS 9."

Just in case anyone else was as dense as me

Thanks again, Rail!
