Default Increase Your Buffer Size, It Says...

Pt 9.01, Mac Pro Dual 2.8, 8g ram
Buffer setting 128
Duet

35 tracks

One SSL plug

One ELEVEN LE

Can't play or bounce until buffer increased to 256.

WHAT I want to know is....would I be getting this if I were on HD Native or is Native only going to really help with low buffers when recording?

This is insane.

Assuming you've done all optimizations, I would suspect a driver issue.
You're system should be able to run at 128 no problem.

Maybe double check IO settings???

I run fairly large sessions at a buffer of 64 samples when recording without the HD Native card. But that's on a Quad.

It's doubtful that without increasing computer power you will do much better with PTHD Native than with PT9.

It's partly the Duet. I used to bomb out at 15-20% CPU and 128 buffer with the Duet. Had to go to 256 just to get it to work and still couldn't get much higher with the RTAS meter.

Using the RME Raydat I'm running into 40% RTAS at a buffer of 64 with no errors yet.

For tracking, you would want to have as small of a buffer setting as you can get away with so overdubbing and monitoring are as close to realtime as possible so your musicians don't hear a delay. Perhaps low latency monitoring can be used. For playback and bouncing to disk as you indicated above, you can set the buffer higher to let your system have more time to get data for streaming back without pops or dropouts.

Thanks all.

I just ran into one of the classic situations where I have now about 42 tracks, and I needed to add a guitar part. So back I went from 1024 to 256, and it worked (used Guitar Rig) but stopped one time and gave me the error. I ignored it, hit play again and it was fine.

I think the TDM guys have it right. Load up with TDM cards and keep your buffer at 1024

But hey that's good info on the Duet....I didn't know it was a dodgey....sure works fine in Logic. I would never have gotten this message over in Logic but I have been wanting to go back to working more and more with PT. I bought the Native card but haven't bought and interface yet. Not sure whether I'll do so or just sell the native card at this point.

Decisions.

Now there's a new (supposedly faster) Duet out....

Yeah it's not the computer. The Mac Pro is asleep most of the time during all this. It's the ever inefficient PT. I can do 80 tracks in Logic without this happening. ARRRGH!

You might check record time allocation in Preferences. If its set to all(no time limit) change that to 10 minutes and see if it helps.
