Default Multiple bit depths in one session - WHEN??

This is becoming more and more important.

Digidesign: when will we be able to use multiple bit depth files in a session (ie: 16 and 24 bit at the same sample rate) without "conversion." Padding 16 bit files with 8 empty bits is very cumbersome when bringing files into a session.

Additionally, in HD systems, will we need to pad 16 bit/48k source files out to 24 bit/96k in order to use them? Is it in the plans for PT to be able to do this without "conversion"? Not asking for SRC on the fly, just to have PT add the empty bits on the fly. I'm told other systems can handle this. It's important to people with huge libraries of SFX and other materials on hard drives.

regards, j mcd

-Yes, PTHD works in the same way that previous versions do...files of a different bit depth and/or sample rate will be converted when importing them into a session.

Are there any plans to change this? It's a waste of time and HD space. 16 and 24 bit files of the same (or integer multple) sample rate NEED to be directly usable in a session.

This has been brought up here before with a number of people chiming in to agree.

Multiple bit depths could probably be supported, but different sample rates will always need to be converted. Converting sample rates, even by integer factors, is NOT just a matter of stuffing in zeroes.

Frederick,

I think its quite clear that we are talking about bit depth.
Every other audio program does it and has done for ages.
You would think that DAE would have been upgraded for the HD release.
This is a bit slack.
Its a very important feature as we all work at 24 bit but use many samples at 16 bit from CDs.
This should be a GIVEN and not a "could be".
