The plan would be for me if it updated my perpetual license. As it is, it is just a ruse to get me into the subscription model which I certainly will NOT be doing.

Stephen
Well obviously the plan is not for you if you refuse to get current via subscription.
I imagine that some with expired perpetuals will simply run on what they have for some number of years, then if they decide to upgrade, will buy a new full priced perpetual license (provided they continue to be available)

But honestly seems to me the offer is not a "ruse",,,,,, a sales tactic ? Yes,,,,, a "ruse" ? Not really ... Given it is a clearly stated offer, to allow people, who no longer have a current perpetual license , to get a discount for starting on a subscription plan only ... which seems pretty straight forward ........

I think the good thing is that Avid is now allowing people to keep their perpetual license. Having to surrender a perpetual license just isn't right. Considering people paid good money for it, they should be allowed to keep what they bought. At the very least I hope they continue this policy.

As said before in this thread, this is an offer to push subscription, it happened before with similar subscription only offers. Haven't see any promo for perpetual PT products for long time, like they don't exist! The only sales and special offers have to do with the subscriptions.

Avid will stop selling new perpetual licenses and the only way to use PT for a new customer, will be by purchasing a subscription.

The current perpetual license holders will have two options:
a) Keep on paying the annual plan to keep it current or b)move to a subscription without surrender their perpetual license(s). These with expired annual plans will have only the option b.

Either way, it is still a subscription model.

Cheers!

Adobe would seem to be the model that Avid has been chasing, with their approach to subscriptions. I think they see Adobe as their competition, more so than other DAW manufacturers.

So what we're talking about is business models as a whole, and yes - I personally think they'll do away with perpetual licenses the minute they think they can afford to. Adobe didn't just make that decision overnight either.

Probably, but I really hope not. Avid still gets money from perpetual users who intend to stick with PT [updates] year after year, so IMO why risk losing them altogether? There's a reason why these people chose a perpetual license, even if they still are updating it. Some people just really don't like the idea of not 'owning' their software, where it goes away the minute they don't pay. Like me. There are other DAWs to choose from; we are not lacking in the audio world. I also own licenses for my previous DAWs—Logic, Cubase Pro, and S1—which are available to me if I had to choose. Steinberg and PreSonus got the money from me because of their cross-grade sales. That says something. I really do hope Avid weighs all of this instead of just ending Perpetuals.

Adobe, well, I had licenses for it up to CS5 Extended. I had upgraded along those years when they allowed that. Once that choice ended, I didn't want to go subscription and didn't care if my versions weren't the latest. I still have the suite on an old computer if I want to use it (but I never do); otherwise I've since switched over to the Affinity stuff which is great. And apparently it's not just me according to the people on the Affinity forums. I do know Photoshop better since I had bought it back at version 1, thus probably prefer it because I was so used to it, but eh. Affinity is just fine and quite impressive on its own, and I don't see myself ever going subscription with Adobe. They lost me a long time ago, and it's sad, but it is what it is.

Well It's all speculation of corse BUT ..
Bob Olhsson and I already discussed this on the previous page.
Again while Audobe may be direct competition for Media Composer
I don't see Adobe Audition as really being competitive with Pro Tools at all .....
Therefore , I don't really see Avid as chasing Adobes subscription model specifically ,,,, ??

And Again I think from a purely business model standpoint (now that they have done away with perpetual reinstatement) . I don't think Avid would want to do away with the revenue from the annual perpetual upgrade/support plan .
Again I think currently Avid has the best of both worlds,,,, they get annual revenue form Perpetual & upgrades, and they get monthly and annual revenue from subscription only.
I certainly could be wrong but I just don't see a significant revenue increase from dumping perpetual for subscription only . In hopes that everybody would just switch to sub only . Given the vast negative reaction this simple promo to give expired perpetuals a break on switching to subscription has generated... I would think they must be aware that dumping perpetuals would generate far far more and infuriate a big number of current annual upgrade perpetuals.... We will see

Apologies, but there is another option which many have been choosing for years now.

c) Keep their perpetual license and no annual plan or subscription.

As I stated before, I'll consider buying a new license and years support when the time comes or if they are being pulled from the market.

Definitely, there is the choice to "get out of the loop" and use the version you have, as long as it does the job.
Basically that's the best option to pass a message to Avid, but they don't listen anyways...

Me, getting closer to that choice as well, to be honest.
Each year, is getting harder to justify the annual cost for Ultimate, since the development is too slow, added features are short listed, the whole experience with Avid gets really annoying.
Also i use Studio One 5 more than PT for mixing and that is not going to change as it seems...That is option d)!

Cheers!

I couldn't agree more. No problem with paying for value. But even the most basic bugs have been going unsolved for years now. They won't keep getting away with this.
