Check out Markertek (markertek.com) for phone devices (usually a box with phon in & out with a line in & out taps) that do what you need. Most broadcast supply houses have them in stock.

Rat Shack makes a cheap phone recorder. It was designed to be used with a tape recorder so the output of the device is on an 1/8" plug.

The old answering machine I used to have (that used cassette tapes) was able to record phone calls.

I have a cordless phone with a mini (3/32") stereo jack that is used for I/O to a headset. I bought a mini adapter to 1/4" TRS and then split the signal in and out like that. It took some creative patching and phone work, but it worked great. I have a few phone lines here at my disposal so it was little easier and it only cost me $3 bucks. Definately NOT hi-fi but worked for my purpose. I looked into the markertek stuff but it was way too expensive for my purpose, I just lucked out and had a phone that worked already.

Yeah, the headset jack on any cordless phone with headset capability works just like any regular insert jack...just get a 3/32" -> 1/4" adapter and you can use it with any digital audio system - not to mention, you can use a quality microphone to record one end of the phone call...

Last time i did this i bought a second hand telephone and connected a TS jack socket in parallel with earpiece ( this carries both sides of the conversation unlike the mouthpiece )

If i remember rightly i then fed this into the instrument input of an EMO d.i. box and passed that on to the mic amp on my console. I've got a feeling i could have padded the mic amp and gone straight in without the d.i. box.

I also set a mic up in the room with telephone which i found usefull in the final balance.

P.S. I think this may be technically against telecom regulations !!!!

eddy, don't know if this helps but it's the most effective way I have found to do it.
Unfortunately it requires a PC but I am suggesting looking for something like this for a Mac.
HotFax Message Center will record a phone call or conversation and save it as a wav file.
Just be sure to sset the max message length based on how long you need it to be.
It gives you a really clear phone type recording.
