Default Thinking of upgrading to 8

Hi everybody,
I'm currently on ver. 7.4 running on 10.4.11 Tiger, and since I'm between projects right now I thought this might be a good time to upgrade both (PT and the OS). But what do I need to do first? Update the OS? Or am I supposed to do both at the same time?

I see in the Sticky there's something about a Combo Updater. What exactly is that and who needs it? What is the "combo?" Is it for upgrading to Leopard & PT8 at the same time? Or is it just for updating from an earlier version of Leopard? If you click the link it takes you to an Apple site that says "10.5.5 Combo Update" but I don't see anything there about ProTools.

Thanks.

You'll need a Mac user to answer the question re. the combo update, but you need to be running Leopard 10.5.5 or higher before you install PT8. I recommend having a backup plan. My usual method is to clone my system drive with the old OS and 7.4, then do all the updates(I would uninstall 7.4 before updating OSX. Then install PT8(disconnect your interface before the uninstall, and don't reconnect until the PT8 installer asks for it).

I think I figured out the combo update thing. I guess if you buy Leopard from the box etc. you get an earlier version of Leopard and then the combo update just updates you to the latest version. (Snow Leopard?)

Thanks.

Pretty sure 10.5.8 is what you want. I don't know that Snow Leopard is approved yet by Digi.

HI,

the Combo Update is a large File from the Apple.com server which contains ALL updates for all OS X components at once an is usually around 500MB to 1GB big.

The Combo is the big sister of the "Apple Software Update" option found in the top left Apple-Menu on your screen. This Menu checks your current OS X version and installed software against the newest versions available from Apple and updates these components as new version become available.

This is called Delta Update and is not recommended for updating a system running PT. Because some components might not get updated as needed.

So always d/l the Combo-Updaters from Apple manually and install them.
After that you must repair Disk Permissions with the Disk Utilitly.
You should do that every time you installed new software.

best

So if I buy the boxed package of Leopard with the iLife Suite and install that, then I should download the Combo Updater to finish updating?

Yes. And you should always use the Combo updater in the future as well, even after you have PT installed..

Snow Leopard will be a paid upgrade ($30 I think), not an update of Leopard.

Chances are that PT will not be ready for SnowLeopard for at least a few weeks once it is available..

Yeah, I don't think I need to bother with Snow Leopard just yet. I'll probably just use the combo and get 10.5.8 or whatever is the current approved version.

Thanks everybody for all your help.

Yeah.. but "at least" covers a lot of ground...

I kinda toying with the idea of getting another HD to install SL (to play with) and not worry about PT right away.. When PT's ready, then I'll be a little ahead of the game..
