I stand corrected. Anyway the fixed storage was a deal-breaker for me when they did that

Yes it really limits the life of your Macs now that everything is soldered in. I use to upgrade my Mac for 5 to 7 years. Now I'm having to upgrade 3 years since last purchase but my workload and projects have increased a lot in the last 3 years too.

My 2 cents;
i7 quad or better(no i5 and no i3)
16GB RAM minimum
13" screen is way too small(so the 13" laptop gets a "no" from me)
Refurbed trashcan or 27" iMac(with i7 and lots of RAM) make sense(as does the mini if properly spec'd)

I like the portability of the mini or MBP. I live between 2/3 countries so its easier to move with my Genelec 8010 and a little system when I travel.

Okay then. So pick a well spec'd mini and I'm sure you find a display everywhere you go

Always hook up my MBP to another monitor or a TV when traveling. so no issue with the screen size. Looking at the i7 Mini with 16Gb ram or more for portability. Traveling with that and my Genelec 8010's and apogee element, it is easy to have a portable studio. There is alway a tv to plug into where ever I go.
My 2017 MBP is an i5 and up till now was doing ok running up to 30 track mixes with sometimes 50 plugins and a few VI's. New projects sharing sessions with more pro engineers is killing the i5.
Though I thought the new MBP i5 might still be a good upgrade but after this thread I will go with the Mini i7 3.2 ghz
And I have a 27inch iMac in Australia, just so big to move, Living between Oz, Europe and Caribbean the last few years.

Yep will go with this one but the 2020 version, has same spec but bigger SSD and will get at lest 16GB Ram maybe more.

Just to make me hesitate my decision on the mini the 2020 MBP with the 10 gen i7 is giving some of the fastest single core Geekbench 5 result of ANY Mac ever!

It appears to only be a quad core CPU though. With all things considered including noise and cost, the Mac mini 3.2ghz 6-core Mac mini would be a clearly winner for Pro Tools use if you ask me. I've got a MBP. It works great for Pro Tools, but it becomes impractically noisy rather quickly.
