Given 1 IDE and 1 SATA harddrive, which would be better suited for the OS and ProTools install, and which would be better for the ProTools audio files (all other factors being equal)?

Assuming the same speed and cache, I doubt it makes any difference. I have used both and in every combination and all work fine. Right now, I use an IDE drive for system and have 3 SATA drives in a triple drive cage setup where the drives can be removed anytime(after they are stopped under Safely Remove Hardware). No caddies or tools required so its quite handy. My only suggestion would be to use the smaller for system(if they are not the same capacity). I doubt I will buy any more IDE drives.
