I've encountered an interesting issue with protools and a custom system I'm building for a client. The system has 3 SATA hard drives and an SATA dvd writer. There are two SATA ports on the motherboard and we have a promise SATA PCI card for another two ports. When running the main system drive and dvd writer on the main board's SATA adapter I can format the drive, install windows XP, and update all drivers no problem. At this point I can either install the promise card running the other two drives, or i can install protools LE 6.7, but if I do both (in either order) windows will crash at the startup "windows XP Professional" scrolling bar screen. Specifically, I get a "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL" blue screen message. Thankfully I can hit F8 and select "load last good configuration", but I cannot get all 3 drives and protools to boot windows XP.
My client built this system based on turnkey systems reccomended on the digidesign site, but he failed to notice that none incorporate more than two SATA drives at a time. So my real question is if anyone here at the DUC is running more than one SATA adapter on their system? If so I'd love to hear about it. I've spent many hours troubleshooting this issue, even going as far as swapping the promise adapter with an adaptec, and plugging the drives/adapter into an entirely seperate system. Since I was able to reproduce the same scenario on two seperate intel based systems, I'm currently of the belief that there must be a compatability issue with protools LE and windows XP systems running two SATA adapters. I'm running the Promise 2 port SATA controller (not the RAID version) and I have an onboard SATA controller on my mobo that I have my SATA DVD burner attached to. I'm running the 74GB WD 10K Raptor drivers, however, I use a standard IDE drive for the OS... so I don't have 3 SATA drives. It may be worth trying a small 40gig IDE drive for the OS to test?

with either computer, even with no drives attached, adding an SATA card (promise or adaptec) causes the system to reboot at startup. It does this after the drivers are installed, and only occurs if protools is installed as well.
