Presonus Quantum 2626 looks good too & it's Thunderbolt 3. Anybody here tried one?

Default Re: Thumbs up to the Presonus Quantum 4848

I just lucked out and scored a used Quantum 4848 on ebay for $810 shipped! So excited. In thinking about it, if/when Apple comes out with their new M1 Pro or Max Mac Minis, this will be the ultimate combination and suit all my needs for years to come. Trying to make plans for it and the work I'll need to do to switch over.

I've decided to ditch certain digital I/O connections I currently use with my 192 blue interfaces and instead use the analog. With 32 analog and 16 ADAT simultaneous IO is A LOT of IO with the Quantum 4848!! Here's a list of plans:

2 inputs/outputs - Eleven Rack AES/EBU - will use analog TRS to a TRS patchbay and patch to the Quantum 4848 analog.

2 inputs/outputs - Lexicon MPX 100 spdif output - will go all analog TRS patchpay and patch to the Quantum 4848 analog.

2 inputs/outputs - TC Electronic M350 spdif input/output - will go all analog TRS patchpay and patch to the Quantum 4848 analog.

2 outputs - Line 6 Helix LT AES/EBU - will will go all analog TRS patchpay and patch to the Quantum 4848 analog.

2 inputs - KRK ERGO main studio monitors SPDIF out - will will go all analog TRS patchpay and patch to the Quantum 4848 analog.

Other gear hookups will be

8 - inputs - Hearback 8 channel monitoring - will use Quantum ADAT output to Hearback ADAT input. (love it my hearback for tracking bands, I have 6 receiver units on stands, artist sets their own volumes)

8 - outputs Digidesign PRE - will use Db25 analog output to Quantum DB 25 input
8 - outputs Mackie 800R PRE - will use Db25 analog output to Quantum DB 25 input
8 - outputs Panasonic RAMSA WR-AD96M - will use ADAT output to Quantum ADAT input (this is a great, and I do mean great, mic pre and can be had cheap on ebay ($300-$400) if you keep your eyes out for it).
8 - outputs Focusrite OctoPRE MKII - will use ADAT output to Quantum ADAT input

I'll ditch my HD Native card and my 2 192 blues once I'm sure the performance is there and free up a ton of rackspace.

I believe I'll keep my Apogee Big Ben and use it as my master WC for everything.

For the Mac Mini - I'll hookup 3 HDMI monitors (2 I use in the control room, 1 in the tracking room - 1 HDMI port, 2 thunderbolt to HDMI adapters), I'll hookup a 5 space hot swappable storage USB3 tower for large physical SATA drives, and I'll have at least 1 additional m.2 USB (or thunderbolt working drive), of course I'll keep my USB hub and USB enclosed CD burner. I'll have 1 thunderbolt 3 to 2 adapter and a long cable (10 ft) going from my computer room to my Quantum 4848 interface. I also have a MOTU midi 128 interface via USB - let's hope the drivers work with Monterey, fingers crossed.

Setting up software will be time consuming and I think rather than using Apple migration assistant to go Mojave to Monterey with all my plugins software etc., I'll painfully just start with fresh and reinstall all. I'm sure there'll be some hiccups with some plugins on M1 but I'm confident I can deal with it.

The real question - will I be able to launch Pro Tools Ultimate and/or Studio One Pro and set that buffer down real low and get low low low native latency even with lots of plugins on M1 Max with 64gb of RAM and the Quantum 4848 and it's drivers running balls out. Time will tell. I think I'll hear better A/D conversion quality from the 192 blues to the Quantum.

Whoa this is a lot, but let me know if anyone has thoughts here.

Let us know how the transition goes. I’m thinking about ditching my 192 as well for a 4848. Looks like the obvious choice for those who are currently using a 192.

I'm super pumped! Waiting and waiting finally Apple gave us a gift and then some! Yesterday at the event they announced The Mac Studio - a mac mini on steroids with an M1 Ultra chip which is TWO M1 Max chips combined together to act like 1 chip. You get 6 thunderbolt ports, 2 USB 3, GB ethernet and and HDMI port. I opted for the 64gb of RAM and upgraded the boot drive to 4TB SSD. This is a powerhouse I've been waiting for to replace my main studio Mac and should be slammin' with my PreSonus Quantum 4848 and (I hope) with Pro Tools Ultimate and Studio One Pro DAW software. To say I'm beyond excited would be an understatement. So glad I waited and didn't get the laptops announced last fall. Still cost me $5K but I think totally worth it. I also think the base entry point Mac Studio for $2K would be totally fine for most users. This is the computer folks. Go get one!

Well I finally achieved my goal! Mac Studio Ultra M1 with 64 GB Ram, 20 CPU core, 48 GPU, 4 TB SSD. Works like a champ with my new (used) Quantum 4848. Now I have to sell 2 fully loaded 192 digi blues, a Waves DLI, a Waves Impact Server, a 2010 Mac Pro 64 GB RAM 12 core and an HD Native Card.

Amazing that most plugins and software work with a few exceptions.

Slate Virtual Mix Rack does not work in Studio One Pro until they update it. Does work in Pro Tools.

AIR Instruments - some do, some don't

The standalone Eleven Rack Editor does not work at all. I really wish someone at AVID made an M1 version, this would be a nice gift! If not can anyone out there make it work? Jeffro are you listening?

I'll come back with more details later, all I can say is, Mac Studio is a total winner in my book!

A few months late to the party, but I have a 4848 in brand new condition that is just sitting in my rack. If anyone is interested, Id sell and ship it to anywhere in the US.

I bought it to use with my soundcraft ghost console. Unfortunately the Ghosts PSU got hosed and I decided to go hybrid with a Carbon. So I have both a Ghost 24 LE (sans PSU) and a 4848 that Im ready and willing to offload in NJ.

You may want to post an ad in the Buy Sell section of the forum where it will get more views.
