bounces not really 32 bit?
So I've now had 3 tracks rejected by rather large labels as "44/16 in a 44/32 wrapper". So they can't/won't accept them. On my end, The bounces from Pro Tools are bounced at 32. When I do "get info" on the Mac, it says "44k/32bit".
I've been doing this for 20+ years. first problems I've had. But it's with multiple mixes. Brian

Are you applying 16-bit dither anywhere? Dither will remove the lower bits.
Try Stillwell’s free Bitter bit scope and see if you can find where in the signal path this is happening. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Re: bounces not really 32 bit?
I mean its an 80 track session. I don't know if any of the plugins are applying dither unwantedly. I'll look up that program. Any other help or experience would be helpful

Re: bounces not really 32 bit?
Thanks for the Bitter Tip man! So I learned something new. may not save my job. but I learned something new.
I use Slate FGX a lot as a final plugin. And if the dither is on, no matter what you say in Pro Tools, it exports the file at that bit rate. So in Slate, if you set dither to 16 (or maybe it defaults there I don't know why it was set there), even I bounce at 32, the labels sniff it out and it gets rejected. I then set FGX to 24, and Bitter showed 24. Then I turned FGX dither off, and voila, it goes to 32. I then pulled the 16 bit and the 32 bit mix into PT, and flipped phase on one. Everything nulls except some lead vocal fx. so I have no idea what that means. except they sound the same to me. T-Racks and Sony Limiter did not have this issue. If you can call it that. I havent pondered dither in many years. Just passing this on to anyone else who might be in my shoes at some point.

Re: bounces not really 32 bit?
I think he's referring to the master fader. Is there anything which the whole mix is running through which might be dithering? Those are the plugins I'd be looking at.

Re: bounces not really 32 bit?
possible explanation: if you printed the mixes as separate passes, any kind of modulation on reverbs or delays etc might not necessarily start on the same cycle if they're not tempo-locked.

Re: bounces not really 32 bit?
re:verbs... thats my thought. they aren't the same every time so they wouldn't null.
Mentally, I am glad they sound the same. But what stress and confusion! Over non essential parts of the wave.

Re: bounces not really 32 bit?
This is a BS requirement for any music which is reasonably compressed - rock, pop, EDM, country, rap. I can see the desire for a 24 bit file for some classical music with wider dynamic range, but no one is ever going to hear the difference between a dithered 16 bit file and a 32 bit file on pop etc.
Anyway, the above is a bit of an aside, but no surprise you can't hear the difference. Dominic

Re: bounces not really 32 bit?
It's not about sonics, it's about standardization. They request these specs across the board and a computer checks upon upload to see if the file qualifies. No one is sitting and listening and judging which format is necessary. I've worked with the quality control department at these places and it's largely automated.
That's out of our control; what's being asked here is why the file is being considered 16/44. |
