Default NTSC to PAL DAT

Here is what I would like to do, is it correct? I do not have PAL black burst and need to generate a PAL DAT for European post production. If I do a Pull-Up in Pro Tools and record to the DAT ANALOG at 48K...would it not play back correctly in PAL sync.
Time code is not the issue here only the ability to line up Two-Pops.

You need to clock the DAT otherwise it will drift over the length of a film.

I actually should have said a "Pull-Down" in Pro Tools. Also these are 30" TV spots will drift be a substantial problem over this short a time.

Drift due to the DAT running on its own crystal will not be an issue for 30 second pieces. Are your clients standards-converting NTSC to PAL (play with .1% pullup), or are they transfering 24 frame to 25 frame (~4.1% pullup)?

Thanks Richard. I was right the first time with the 1% pull-up they ARE going NTSC to PAL.

I think I got it figured out. 1.DAT to internal crystal (:30 spots Only). 2.Pull Down PT 4% and record onto DAT analog.
3.When Europe plays back in PAL video the DAT will Pull Up and the audio will be back to the proper speed and pitch.

The DAT is going to record and play at the same speed for you as for them. Why are you slowing down your Pro Tools by 4%? That doesn't sound right to me. How did you arrive at that choice?

Why would the DAT magically pull up in Europe?! I live in Europe but I have never seen this happen.

Hello there...
As I know 30 seconds mean 30 seconds in both PAL and in NTSC world; the only difference is frame rate...
If I were you I would:
- ask the video facility for PAL QT movie (any codec)
- put the video track on timline
- switch frame rate to 25 fps
- check the sync
Both NTSC and PAL ads have to be 30 seconds in lenght so the only difference are "inside" each second...

Several weeks ago I had to prepare NTSC sound tv ad created in PAL originally.
I told the video guys to prepare the NTSC cut that goes in sync with the soundtrack, so finally there was no change in the sound.

Best regards
Kuba

It is likely that there will be a need for .1% pullup, but even this is not "a given". .1% means one NTSC frame of drift in 30 seconds. Probably no big deal either way but it should be checked.
