Default AVXL and Time Base Correction

Digitizing from 3/4 Video (BVU800) into an AVXL system needs a time base corrector to get a stable video signal. Will AVXL work with the RS-170 signal standard or does it need RS-170A? I contacted both Avid and Digidesign about this issue and they don't have an answer. Has anyone tried the Hotronic AR-31 TBC with an AVXL system?

I have not tried it with that TBC but I cannot imagine any reason it would not work. What are you worried about?

There are a number of different format outputs for time base correctors, some of them output RS170 composite signals, some of them RS170A, and some of them have advance sync options. I have tried 3 different TBCs with AVXL and only one of them worked well. Of course it is the most expensive of all of them, and will output multiple formats. Digi and Avid so far don't seem to know which format is the prefered format, nor does the dealer.

doesn't the BVU have built in TBC? Dang, i thought it would. I know the JVC's upper end decks have it. (Making sure it is on has always done the trick for me.)

hope this helps

"...only one of them worked well."

What is the difference you see? I cannot imagine how advance sync into AVXL would be needed for any audio work. Anyhow, this discussion is on the fringe of my knowledge so do not rely on my advice.

These days I only use my AVXL with a cheapo Sony BetaSP or some rented high end digital decks. I have never had to think about such things. About the worst thing I have seen is that black bar that creeps up or down the screen, which is a sure sign that something is not getting proper sync.

(Most U-matic decks I have ever seen did not come with a TBC, unless you installed it as an option.)
