Re: Eliminating vocals/phase issue
Yup..
With both tracks (L+R) panned in the center (mono), select one side and invert the phase. When you play them both they will have everything in the center track gone. To make it sound a bit better, you can add another two tracks of the original L+R, scoop out the mids (leaving the sub and hi's) and add that to the vocal-less two tracks. let me know if you have any problems... Good luck James

James, Thanks so much for your great response. I feel like a bit of an idiot here, but how do you "invert the phase" by selecting one side? Is there a button or something? I am glad that I can do it, though, and as soon as I get past this technical thing, I will be all over it. Thanks in advance... nz

Re: Eliminating vocals/phase issue
Just "insert" a 1-band E.Q. on one of the channels and click the phase icon to throw it out of phase. The phase icon is upper right hand corner of E.Q. plug-in and looks like a circle with a line horiz. thru it (I think).

Re: Eliminating vocals/phase issue
Use either the 1 band or time adjust
plug on "both" channels, then click the phase out on only 1 of the tracks... Eric www.peaksound.com |

Eliminating vocals/phase issue
Hello all,
I have a project that I need to do a "karaoke" thing and basically take the vocals out of the mix in a stereo/CD track. I know that some of the new CD players have this feature to put things out of phase (I think) stock built into the unit. I don't have one of those, though. My question is, once I import the CD track into PT, can I do the same thing within Pro Tools? Thanks.

Re: Eliminating vocals/phase issue
This works best if the vocals are recorded at identical levels/eq on both tracks. If not experiment with the levels by potting one side up/down slightly until the vocals disappear most effectively. Since this is essentially a subtraction issue any instrument recorded dead center will also drop out of the mix, for the most part, and you may have to restore some of the bass with eq as well.
