Default OT: Mics (AKG 414/Neumann U87)

The owner of the studio just ordered 2 new mic's.. Well, new to us, actually they are both vintage.. The neumann u87 is the original, with the battery powered supply, not the new Ai version.. and the AKG is a C414B-ULS, not any of the newer versions.. both are nice because they have switchable pickup patterns and multiple pads.. the AKG actually has 4 pickup patterns, the U87 has 3.. but anyway, for anyone that has these, how do you like them?? just wondering what to expect, they won't be in for a few weeks, and I'm filthy with anticipation

thanks people

eric

I've used both and have been very happy with them. There is a recent thread in the TDM section regarding the U87 and the difference or lack thereof between "a" and "ai". As for the mics, I like the 414 when I want a really clean sound with very little coloration. That's not to say the U87 colors it tremendously, just a more hyped presence to my ear. They're both great and you're going to love them.

I have both, the 414 is a no brainer very warm and present. Very easy Mic for all types of applications. The U87 requires much more work and outboard ( compressor, pre-amp) to really get it to shine. ( IMHO)

All and all two great mic's for the studio

Great!! I can't wait.. I think the first thing I might use the U87 for is a Front Of Kit for a drum set.. Maybe 3 - 4 feet up, about 6 - 8 feet away.. and then maybe try the 414 for the same thing, A/B them.. Someone said to try the 414 in Uni, on a snare.. I love trying mic's all over and on any and everything.. might use the 414 in a tall corner of the studio as an ambient mic.. oh, the possibilities.. God I love being an engineer..

414's are a staple of the studio, there's little you cannot do well with them.

U87 again is an industry standard, hwoever they vary greatly from mic to mic. Give it a good critical listen if you haven't already bought, alot of them ar epast their prime.
