Default Mac Mini 2018 & PT...

Considering a maxed out Mac Mini 2018 as a replacement for my old trusted cheese grater.

Any experiences?

Any recommendations on ram? Crucial?

Thanks,

Boe

I did this this upgrade late last year.

I went from PT HD Native PCIe with Avid and Apogee I/O boxes on a cheese grater to an Apollo X multi unit setup on the Mac mini. There was an adjustment period as I needed to acclimate to the Apollo workflow, but once I did I couldn't happier. My buffer is parked at 1024 and I don't get ANY 6101s or 9093s anymore like I used to when I needed to run PT at a 64 sample buffer. And I have much lower latency for phones/monitoring.

I also took a risk and only did 16gigs of RAM and all has been well. Granted, I do VERY little in the way of VIs, so I guess it wasn't that much of a risk.

Of course I did have to buy a TB3 hub and a USB hub to get everything all connected which was a bit of a PITA, but it's all good to go now and I am loving it.

Hope this helps.

I just did this and so far has been solid. It's a very fast machine and has taken all I can throw at it...but no VI's here. Installed 32 gigs of ram myself. It's a little tricky but can be done. Bought an OWC 6 bay TB enclosure and a Sonnet TB PCIe box for HDX and a Black Magic Intensity Pro card but it has to be a TB2 and use a TB2 to 3 adapter. I tried TB3 but too many problems with it. TB2 is solid.

So far it's been a good experience.

I went from a 2010 Mac Pro 12 core to a 2018 mini 3.2 GHz, i7, 512GB SSD and couldn't be happier. I replaced the ram which took all of 45 min. A lot of good videos online and I installed the Crucial 2x16GB. It's been extremely solid and very fast. I do a lot of orchestral music so the way for me to go was using VEP7, which carries 50% of my VI's. PT handles the other 50. I think you'll be satisfied.
