Boot to desktop is fine if you want, but I don't like the idea of having the Start Button back. I like going to the left bottom corner and just having it appear. It keeps my task bar cleaner. If they just have it as an option, cool, and include the option for the standard start menu, cool, but I would like to have the option to keep it the way it is, I like the Modern UI personally.

It's probably safe to say that they learnt their lesson and these will be optional. That's always been the MS way in the past. SartIsBack fits my own desktop workstation needs. Metro is good for my laptop and tablet. XP is coming up to it's final end of support and MS would like the undecided corporate world to jump on W8, not W7. In my opinion, that's probably the only reason they're doing this. At least we all have a good variety of options to choose from now. That's a good thing.

Maybe the 14% drop in PC sales last quarter too.
What a huge cluster from MS
I'm so confused please take all the buttons and options away.
It's about apps, selling apps.

The key is to sell the customer what you want them to buy, not what they want.

Reminds me of another company.....

+1 billion, which brings my main perpetual debate on MS forums to educate the game playing/movie watching/music listening/book reading/social media engaging content consumers who say the desktop is dead and touch is the future. Content consumption "apps" on content consumption "devices" are all created using content creation "computer programs" on powerful "desktop computers". Even all the separate components of a game created for a tablet device runs through a multitude of programs during creation, such as Maya, 3D Studio Max, Photoshop, Pro Tools, AutoCad, various programming languages, compilers, Media Composer, After Effects etc. These heavy shortcut key, hardware controller, menu driven programs used to create all the content will never be ported or exist in iOS or Metro on a content consumption tablet or devce designed for touch. The workflow and needs are completely different. Some form of a desktop and desktop OS will always be around and not going anywhere, as many seem to think otherwise. That type of debate stops when one poses the question, "What is used to create all the content and apps for all the content consumption devices?". It sure aint no iOS/Metro app running in a dumbed down OS on a fingerprint laden monitor, and never will be. Content creation has completely different needs and workflows.

Now that Sinofsky and his adopted policy from that "other company" is gone, MS appears to have seen the light that their old way of choice is something to return to. Let's hope they've had a reawakening.

There's a simple solution for this. If during the boot process the Hardware Abstraction Layer detects a digitizer it boots into the Modern UI. if no touch sensitive devices are detected it bots into the traditional Desktop mode. WHY they haven't adopted this approach is beyond me. It serves both usage mades equally well and promotes the Modern UI experience on the appropriate hardware.

As much as I want the performance enhancements of W8 the whole lack of choice is just as likely to drive me to a Mac.
Word. I've been saying this for a while in regards to both OSX and Windows.

I don't want a mobile OS on my tower. There are workflow elements which suffer when an OS becomes oversimplified and candy coated.

I took me about 3 seconds to dislike win8, and then a further month to absolutely loathe it.
I don't want to share/purchase/get-updates/stay-connected-with.... I just want to get some work done!!!
And I don't want to hold my hand in the air for extended periods of time!

What on earth were they thinking?

Our problem is that M$ and Apple are both hell bent on becoming THE platform of choice for battery powered web browsers.

We in audio have been hitchhiking on their e-mail, word processor and spreadsheet platforms for over twenty years because of the power that was required mostly by spreadsheets. At this point I can do all of that and more on my iPad that runs 15 hours on a charge. Most people today have no use for the kind of power requied for media production and a great deal of use for battery powered hardware. This has completely changed the direction of both Apple and M$ away from what we in production need.

I've only been using win8 for a week but am actually far more impressed than I expected. I finally figured out that I can hit the windoze key and go right to the desktop or hit it again, type the first letter of the app I want and one click opens it. Having started using computers on a mac in 1986, I'd never used the "Apple" key for anything the control key isn't the equivalent of on PeeCee. When I moved over to XP rather than embracing system neXt, I continued mousing around the same way I had on the mac and almost never touched the windoze key. I finally get it.

Im actually enjoying Win8... I have PT10 running on it.

It boots in a snap, I have a big PT icon on the start screen that boots PT with a single click, I get back to the start screen with the win key, just type what im looking for, hit the win key again, and im back in PT.

I like it, it's fast and getting for me a lot more streamlined than the start menu.
