Groups functions not working

I've noticed this both on M powered and on HD only at random times. Today i was doing some editing from a session I didn't create and whenever I switch to volume automation the tracks im working on that are grouped stop being grouped and I can't click with cursor to select all at once. As soon as I go back to waveform view and not volume automation it works again. I'm sure its some setting but haven't figured it out... anyone know?
