But isn't the Rosetta 800 a 8 channel interface? last time I checked, the 192 cand do 16 channels...
So isn't the tit for tat comparison a bit inacurate?

The 192, out of the box does 8 in 8 out.

You can get an expander card that lets you do EITHER 8 more inputs OR outputs. not both.

So you can have 8 in 16 out OR 16 in 8 out.

But you're right. It is an advantage.

Unless you can expand the Rosetta too.

WOooooooooo. I'll have to find out. I know that to run the LE software, the LE interface must be connected to the computer. BUt they are firewire, well except M-Box, which is usb. May have to just use the adat I/O's. Also the DIGI-001 connects with a PCI card.

No offense, but sounds like tnie bought a bunch of 192s. Nothing wrong with those interfaces at all. Sound really good, but we all know that apogee makes a great converter and clock. I asked them why the Rosetta name and they said because of the less features than say an 8000 or Trak 2. No extensive options on metering etc. But it is supposed to be their best sounding converter of all time.

As far as high sample rates, maybe im wrong but the higher you go the more accurate everything has to be clock wise or its a mess. Not to mention hard drive stress at 192!! We've been making great records at 16/44 for years and although the jump to 24 bits was really nice ill stay at 24/44 for now. Clearmountain mixes from an 3348HD to his G series and it sounds great.

I am runing (2) 192's for 24 tracks and some sessions at 192k without any stress from HD's. I'm still using SCSI w/o a glitch maybe some day I'll move to firewire, but for now it's no problem. For cymbals it just doesn't sound that good at 44/24 and it's a small improvement at 192k and perfect on my 2" 16track Studer.....

The Apogee stuff is over rated, over priced and with updates ever 6 months it not worth the time. There's so much marketing hype and so many kids just buying to buy I can just sit on the side lines and purchased equipment after they lose there studio or upgrade to the newest trend...

Would kill for a 16 track 2" 800Mk III!!! After monitoring thru 888s for years the switch to the Rosetta 800 is best described as more analog sounding. Its just so smooth with wonderful clear high end a full low end. Thats all. I really like it.

every 6 months is a slight exaggeration.

oh, but on the subject of way-too-frequent updates; ahem, HD Accel anyone? hmm..

To Sphereman and Thin Ice . . . I have a bunch of aging Mix Plus systems that have the original 16-bit 888s. Would like to know if the Rosetta 800 Mix Pack upgrade you had was a big improvement on the sound over whatever interface you were using before.

Wanted to go to an HD1 96 I/O upgrade . . . but if the Rosetta is enough, it would sure save me a lot of $$$. My dealer quoted me $2,600+ for the 96K Rosetta 800 and a Mix card. That is more than half the $6000 I would need to cough up for the HD upgrade.

I do television commercials . . . so I rarely go beyond 48K and 24 tracks. My Mix+ are fine now. They just sound sterile with the older 888s. The 96I/O of Digi seemed like a solution for a while. But now the Rosetta seems to change all that.

Also with sync issues . . . how will the Rosetta sync to say a USD?

Any suggestions and ideas appreciated!

The difference is amazing. I had used apogees on a numerous occasions before but now on my own rig, which im very tuned into sound wise i, hear a tremendous difference. Just today i was cutting a full track session to PT with the rosetta 800 as the master clock and my first 8 inputs. Some of the drums, and the bass and elec gtr went thru the 800. Seemed so much smoother and fatter!! More like analog!

As far as syncing to the USD, the clock in the 800 is quit a step up. The 800 has a regular word clock out which you could send to the USD. Then your whole system will have good clock and still be able to use the USD for timecode stuff.

Hope this helps
