Default Hum-Like Noise Coming From Monitors When Pro Tools is Open

A high pitched hum, or whine, comes from my monitors only when Pro Tools is open.
I've searched the forums trying to find an answer to this and there's nothing I can find to sort out this problem.
I've tried moving the USB cord to different USB ports on the back of my iMac, and I've tried using different cables running into the monitors. Nothing's worked.

My setup is as follows:
Mbox 2 outputs into Alesis ProLinear 820 Monitors
Pro Tools v. 7.3.1.
Apple Intel iMac v 10.4.7

Anyone please HELP!

This is common, have you got balanced cables in to the monitors?

Cheers

I have the same problem too. We need balanced cables? What is that and what does that mean? Excuse me if its a stupid question. Help is appreciated as always.

thanks

Balanced cables for sure...this is a must. Make sure you get some really good ones too, because you can get some cheap-o balance cables and still have the same problem...it's frustrating.

go with MOGAMI, the best...lifetime warranty.

I'm having this same problem and I'm pretty sure it's nothing to do with the cables. Firstly, I already have balanced cables. Secondly and most importantly, the whine only began after I hooked up an external monitor using the same power strip as my monitors. If I unplug the monitor, the whine stops. And, naturally, the whine is only present when ProTools is running. I figure this is a grounding issue. Is there a solution that doesn't include powering the external monitor from another source? (ie another outlet) Thanks a mil

Is the monitor a CRT or LCD flat screen?

If CRT, you are probably hearing the horizontal oscillator.

You could try a three to two prong power adapter. That will lift the ground on your monitor. But don't leave it that way since the monitor is no longer
grounded.

You could try moving the monitor away from the speakers.

If all fails, try a flat screen monitor.

I assume you are talking about a video monitor.
