Default 002 Rack Output distortion

Hello,

I get this strange distortion in the left output (monitor, headphone and 1-2) of Digi 002 Rack, PT 6.1.1 on Win XP. Can't remember the specs of the system completely (I didn't set it up and am a mac guy most of the time...).

The distortion (obviously!) doesn't show in the channels, the master or the plug-ins and when bouncing, the distortion is audible in playback but is not present in the destination file. The only way I've managed to rectify the problem is by turning the master fader down to -12dB and using the monitor output level to compensate. Now this is something I really wouldn't want to do...

I have two or three different theories on the problem:

a) something to do with the file format, one of the users said there was no distortion when using .wavs. I've not had time to confirm this.

b) a problem with the third-party firewire card we have (sorry, can't remember the make)

c) I doubt that it's a hardware problem with the 002 Rack, cause the distortion is on all of the 1-2 outputs (Monitor, main, headphones), so I suspect either a bug in 6.1.1 or a) or b)

It makes no sense, though: sometimes the distortion is there and sometimes it's gone for a month or so, I've tried tweaking basically everything, but I've had no luck so far.

Anybody else has had the same problem?

Default Re: 002 Rack Output distortion

My 002 doesn't do this, and it sounds like an intermittent hardware problem.

There is some troubleshooting you could do.
- borrow another 002 or 002R, see if it does the same thing.
- try a different pair for output (like 3-4 instead of 1-2). You'll lose the headphone monitor, but this is just for testing.
- reverse the panning. If the problem stays on the same side, it's probably in the 002 hardware.
