PT will check AAX first and use it if available.

I have, and the difference is huge when your plug uses a lot of memory (VI). Even with normal plugs, AAX loads up much much faster so even if a compressor is not any more CPU-friendly it still makes the operator more efficient :)

So does this imply that if you have both versions of certain plugins you can safely move the RTAS versions to the unused folder and only keep the AAX version active?

Yes. But it doesn't change anything, because PT will automatically choose AAX if both are available.

In my experience, if you have both AAX & RTAS of same plugin, it loads the AAX version. If you'd rather run the RTAS version, then remove the AAX version.

I've had issues in PT10.3.9 with having both the RTAS and aax versions of Arturia's Moog Modular, Moog Mini and CS80 emulations. I just move the RTAS version to the unused plugins folder and no problems.
