Default PT 10 Export WAV---Larger File Size

For years, I've been exporting 24:55 programs as 16bit 44.1 Stereo WAVs, always resulting in a file size of 263,719, 156 bytes. After upgrading to Pro Tools 10, those same 16bit 44.1 Stereo WAV files are now 278,207,248 bytes. Can someone wiser than I help me understand why?

If you're upgrading from Pro Tools 7 or below, the difference is going from 8-bit to 16-bit waveform overviews embedded in the wave files. That lets you see more detail of the waveforms when you zoom in.

PT10 exports WAVs with a header problem, see here:

Greetings,

Thierry

Thank you Thierry. I hope this is something Avid addresses soon.
Cheers.

Pro Tools 10 added support for RF64 format.
There is, indeed, a "JUNK" chunk as defined in the official spec to make switching between normal WAV and RF64 a seamless operation.
The spec is here: http://tech.ebu.ch/docs/tech/tech3306-2009.pdf
See section 3.5 on page 9.

The JUNK type chunk was added to the original RIFF/WAVE specification by Microsoft about 20 years ago.

Wow.. are you aware that those files are used in some broadcast systems that do not read this "chunk" of data? Is it possible to add an option in the Export menu to choose which kind of header we want? That's the one reason why I don't use PT10 at this moment (working for a TV channel)...

Thanks for answering Matt. I am with Matthieu however and it should be possible to select this "new" export format in ProTools with the possibility to do it the "old" way. This is one of those "under the radar" updates in PT10 that break some workflows in the real world.

Greetings,

Thierry

Looks like this data "chunk" has been fixed in 10.3.5...or at least the "junk chunk" is now smaller.
