Default Midi track to Instrument track

Folks,

I'm in the process of getting up to speed with Protools 10 (w/Eleven Rack). In order to learn the track paradigm I thought I'd start with importing a multi track midi file.

The import went fine and multiple tracks were created in my session; however, I noticed the midi track doesn't have an "Insert" control strip like the Instrument tracks to assign virtual instruments, i.e xpand2

Is there an easy way to convert a Midi track to an Instrument track so I can assign Virtual instruments to the track?

Thanks,

Patrick

I may do this wrong but it works. Create your instrument track and drag your midi file into that track. You now have your performance on that track!

That works fine. Or show regions on the tracks, highlight the midi, copy, arrow down(the : key) and paste

Patrick,

I'm in your exact same position: I've created a session and imported amulti track MIDI file, put them onto instrument tracks and assigned them to play from virtual instruments. Only I find that the only one that works is Vacuum.

Did you have the same problem?

What was your process in getting the virtual instruments to play MIDI data?

Any help would be great.

Thanks,
Eric.

Put the instruments you want to use on an instrument track. Then route your midi track to the instrument. Much more CPU efficient especially when using sample based plugs like Xpand or Structure.

^ The right idea.

Putting MIDI data directly on the Instrument track isn't very efficient, and is really only a good idea if say you have one VI playing one sound. Most VI's support multi-track MIDI inputs, so you can route several MIDI tracks to a single Instrument track.

For example, in Xpand2, you can route each of the different sounds to its own individual MIDI track (just route the output of each MIDI track to the desired channel). This way, you can control each sound independently, and only use one instance of Xpand for multiple sounds.

Actually, all you need are Aux Input tracks as a place to insert your VI's.

All an Instrument track is, is a combination of a MIDI track and an Aux input.

As has been said is previous posts, you then can just route any MIDI track to whichever plugins you require, using multi-timbral VI's more effeciently by having them playback multiple MIDI streams.

This can be a bit more clear depending on how you like to label your tracks:

Drums-groove
Drums-fill
Piano-part A, etc

might be names of the MIDI tracks ie named for the parts

Structure
Strike
Velvet, etc

Might be names of the Auxes ie named for the VI

The only reason I use Instrument tracks is because they have a different symbol and default color. When the session gets big it makes viewing it a bit easier especially when there is a large number of Audio, Instrument, and Aux tracks in a session.

I understand that now, but another question please?

How then to get each of those single/individual drum instruments on to a separate audio track for each of them?
Say, for instance Xapand a-1 is fed by a kick drum on a separate midi track, and Xpand2 b-2/snare menu, is fed by a snare separate midi track.

Then the 'out' of your midi is used up to feed the instrument in the instrument track with XPand2 on it. Can't use that same out of the midi track to get it to a single mono audio track for say; the kick or the snare.

Same thing with Structure, right?

The only way I can tell is to use Strike and send each of the instruments to a separate out track. And use that out, as an in to an audio track.

And you can have a full drum midi track set up on the Instrument track that has Strike as the Virtual Instrument.
(I purchased Expanded Instrument Pack for Pro Tools, so I've been testing around with these things.)

With Pro Tools 10 now, which I just bought and upgraded to a couple of days ago, is there any new funtionality to be able to get a separate midi snare track sent to Instrument track/xPand2! and have that out to a separate single mono audio track? I'm so confused at this point, too many options and too few working options for this one outcome.

Thanks any who can respond, and understand my question fully. :)

Chuck
