AudioSuite/Consolidate SLOW

Here is an interesting test. Create a new mono audio track, make a lengthy selection(say around 1 hour) get the audio suite signal generator tool and hit render- time how long this takes, it should only take a few seconds. now with that new region selected hit render again to create another new file over top of the first. This time the render will take significantly longer (aprox double) WHY?
Now try this - Create a 5.1 channel track, set the interleaved mode to OFF and repeat the above test, your results should be about the same but in general six times as long because of the extra files. Now try again with Interleaved turned ON- you will be waiting for many minutes for your render. Again WHY?
this behaviour is also evident when using "consolidate" something I did all the time in PT8 now takes ages to process.
Am I Missing something here or is this a result of the new audiosuite render with handles feature?

Increasing my ram seems to have made a difference. I took my machine up to 32 gig and set a 24 gig cache. Once a session has cached the timeline, processing seems to speed up.
