Loudness measurement/adjustment in the broadcast chain
Just had a conversation with an engineer at a local network affiliate. He said they are mostly still using the 0 VU spec to check levels on ingest of local content to their streaming server, but they also have one of these in the chain before transmission. How can it do dialnorm metadata creation in real time when dialnorm is a long-term measurement?

Re: Loudness measurement/adjustment in the broadcast chain
"Loudness control using multi-band multi-stage AEROMAX dynamic range engine"
I'm not sure what that means but I'll guess it is the usual compressor/limiter approach that we all know so well. |

Re: Loudness measurement/adjustment in the broadcast chain
Local affiliates have a long way to go. This was discussed at this past AES. Unless you are working on content that is only airing from this network affiliate, you and your clients are best served by mixing to the parent network's specifications. Go to atsc.org, run a search for A85, and read that document for what to do if the network doesn't give you specifications.

Re: Loudness measurement/adjustment in the broadcast chain
Hi Greg,
i strongly recommend you to watch the webinar from Florain Camerer. It takes you a step further from ITU 1770 to EBU R128. I think the recommendations for the US are from the ATSC. http://tech.ebu.ch/events/webinar_lo...e/off?id=13224 regards Jochen |

Re: Loudness measurement/adjustment in the broadcast chain
Sorry Greg,
you asked about the measurement in the transmission chain. We use the juenger C8000 levelmagic. I think there are no great differences between the two boxes. In the juenger software you can set a target loudness level and a time for measuring. Cause the box is in the transmission chain you won´t set a time for each show. One time for all. http://www.junger-audio.com/fileadmi..._EN_090612.pdf regards Jochen |
