Default preamps and mbox

Hi All-
I'm using the mbox directly into a g4.
I'm pretty happy with my results, but thinking I could better the sound quality with a nice preamp like an API or neve copy.
Does it make sense to buy a preamp to use with the mbox, since it has preamps in it, and my understanding is they can't be bypassed?
Engineering newbie, yes, but I'm having fun and learninga bunch.
Thanks.

If you go in via the TRS line input, you effectively bypass the internal pre.

Sorry for slightly changing hardware but I need help with the following: I want to be able to use my Behringer Tube Ultragain T1953 Preamp. with the Digi 002Rack. What is the safest way to do the hook up and adjust the Trims, if any?
Is the following hookup right:
Phantom Powered Mike ---->T1953 XLR Input;
T1953 1/4"TRS Output ---->Digi002R 1/4" Input 1-4? or 5-8? (If possible, which is correct?)

Note: T1953 Max. Mike input level is +10dBu balanced and unbalanced; Max. Line input level is +23dBu balanced and unbalanced; Max. Output level is +21dBu balanced and unbalanced.
I was used to hook up the same preamp. to my AM-III and always got good results. I just got my Digi002R and I can't exactly follow the instructions on the manual (get lost as I read on).
If someone is familiar with these two units, please help. Thanks.
