MIDI recording freezes PT 6.0 & 7.0
In both 6.0 and 7.0 all PT sessions light or heavy tend to Freeze when recording MIDI (usually after 10-15 mins of seqencing).
I sequence in PT using the Mbox, Triton keyboard, MIDIsport uno, Trigger finger, NI Battery 3 and M-Audio Key Rig. I have recently gotten rid of the dual core PC and for now have reverted back to my older slower Pentium 4 512mb. Its served me well in the past with 5.3.3 so until you guys help me get this MIDI prob figured out I'll be work with this guy. SiSoft sandra report coming soon...

I posted a support case at M-Audio about my MIDI problems (same as yours) and got the following response: ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Please try testing your MIDI device with MIDI-OX (MIDI monitoring and diagnostic software) to see if it is sending and receiving MIDI data properly. This is a shareware utility you can download from http://www.midiox.com/zip/midioxse.exe Download the application and install it, then run it by itself with no other applications running. To set it up for the test: OPTIONS > MIDI DEVICES > INPUT > SELECT ALL OPTIONS FOR M-AUDIO or USB AUDIO DEVICE > OK Then try to input some MIDI data via your device, you should see a readout of information scrolling down the screen as it is received. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Maybe this can help you -- I haven't yet done this test. Also, the MIDI-OX can create logs -- M-Audio support asked me to see if I run into the same MIDI "sticking" problem when running MIDI-OX. If so, I am hopeful that the log will provide some useful info.

Sorry for the delay dudes, I finally got a chance to properly test out the system after running those downloads, the MIDI fix and such. I'm still having the same problem. So here is a hardware report.

I am pleased to report I was able to fix my problem. The solution is fortunately simple but unfortunately expensive -- buy a Digi MIDI I/O box. I yanked out my M-Audio 4x4, applied the MIDI Fix, uninstalled my 4x4 and installed the Digi MIDI I/O unit. I tried all kinds of things to freeze the MIDI and no matter what I tried, it worked like a charm. Things that would normally freeze up my M-Audio 4x4 quickly (like MIDI-merge) had no impact on my new Digi MIDI I/O. This tells me that indeed M-Audio USB interface are NOT completely compatible with Pro Tools. Also, note that just because Avid owns both Digi and M-Audio does not mean the products were developed together nor guaranteed to be compatible. If you want the issue fixed, get the Digi MIDI I/O. I got a good deal at Sweetwater dot com - they were very helpful -- and if the MIDI I/O doesn't fix your problem (highly unlikely) you can return the MIDI I/O for a full refund within 30 days. For a small home studio setup perhaps Digi MIDI I/O is perhaps not the best solution considering it's cost and its unnecessarily high amount of MIDI channels (m box can only achieve so many audio files). Considering the nature of the problem and other product offerings it would make more sense for me to purchase a new M-box 2 or even a digi 002 both of which have built in MIDI. I'm glad something works and that you were able to fix your prob but I think for now I'll wait for a more reasonable solution. Hint hint DIGI, chime in when ever your ready...

No problemo -- note that if you need more than one MIDI input, neither the MBox 2 nor
Digi002 will do the job for you. That's why I originally went with M-Audio 4x4 -- because I have Roland TD-20 drums, Triton keyboard, and Proteus 2000 synth (and other MIDI goodies). I need to have all of these hooked up via MIDI simultaneously. Admittedly, the Digi MIDI I/O is overkill (with 10 MIDI ports), but I just wanted the darn thing to work. Already invested quite a bit in my Digi002 system and recording studio in general and spending the $$$ on this unit made sense for me. I love my Digi002, but one MIDI port isn't enough for me. Also, my MIDI ports on my Digi002 don't work anymore -- Digi tech support were stumped after we did all kinds of tests. I don't know if this is a common problem with the Digi002 MIDI ports, but is something to be aware of. Thanks and good luck, Kevin |
