Default Trouble while recording

I just recorded 2 tracks of guitar using 2 mic's at once with no problem and when I try to record the next 2 tracks I receive the following message while recording, but not while playback occurs:

"DAE can't get audio from the disk fast enough. The disk could be too slow or needs to be fragmented". We're running the program on a Western Digital 7200 rpm external IDE hard drive. I have no firewire connection, but rather USB. I never had this problem before. I defragmented the drive just in case. Does anyone know what is wrong? Thanks in advance.

Seth
