Default Pro Tools SE/Avid - add my own sounds/samples/instruments

I'm having a bit of trouble merely adding sounds to the .ptt files and I'm wondering how I can add my own .wav or .mp3 (voices from home recording) files AS INSTRUMENTS so that I can play them from the keyboard, map them to the keyboard, so to speak. I understand how to bring a wav into the mix but doing that limits me to manipulating only effects for that sound and I want keyboard control as well.
