Default Video codecs and formats that work with Pro Tools

Hey.

So, exactly what video formats will import into Pro Tools? Quicktime, of course, but there seem to be a billion types of compression and codecs that fall under that umbrella.

When I'm asking my TV producer for a video output, what is the best format to ask for that will be a relatively small file size? The Pro Tools manual says to use the Apple DV codec, but those files are massive, and I know mp4s work (H.264?)

What codecs will NOT work? Which ones are frame accurate?

Thanks
Adam

I've yet to experience problems with any particular format, yet. I've used .avi .mpg .mp4 .m4v among a few others. I know at one point PT was pretty picky about file formats, but lately I haven't had any issues importing anything. Are there any particular formats you intend to be using?

I personally don't like Intraframe codecs (h.264, mp4) horrid to scrub jumpy and flickering
photojpeg is probably the best compromise of size & performance

Thanks Dism and CraigF.

Just looking to see what formats are working. I would love to hear the official word from Digidesign; the information in the reference manual is not very exhaustive. Apple DV is clearly not the only option.

Thanks
A

it depends on your hardware
most codecs will play but how well depends on how much power you can give them

Perhaps it's because I'm using PT 8 but the only formant that seems to work for me is DV compression. QT is a blank picture and mp4 does not make for a smooth playback.

Hi and welcome to the community.

If you can't manage Pro Tools to support 10fps (never tried this myself) maybe you could ask your video editor to export the stop motion at 30fps (supported) and repeating every frame three times? The project timecode would be weird but you'd be able to work.

Also make sure you're using a supported and preferably recommended video codec and container.

Good luck!
