Default Basic Question from someone new to Pro Tools.

Another former Sonar user here trying to record in a mode Sonar referred to as Sound On Sound.

For example in Sonar I could start recording at measure 1 for 4 measures. Then record again on the same track, starting at measure 1, adding a part at measures 3 and 4.

When I try this in Pro Tools, starting from measure 1, it overwrites what was previously recorded.

Punching in abruptly cuts off previously recorded instruments that should fade naturally.

Thanks in advance!

not available in Pro Tools .. IF you Are wanting to Hear what was done on the 1st Take while recording on the 2nd Take ...

you could use playlists in cycle record but you are not going to hear each take on top of the last one ..

if i am reading what you are asking correctly ..

think of pro tools like a tape machine

And use a separate track for each take if you want to hear each take as you're recording. And when done and you want everything on one track record the outputs of the individual tracks to one audio track. More work than what you had to do in Sonar though.

I am pretty sure pre roll allows you to hear what is o the track before you punch in, Ctrl 1 on p.c bring us transport to which you can program pre roll. Have a gander at loop recording and creating new playlist. In preferences you can select create new playlist when loop recording. This allows you to work on one track and have multiple spill tracks if you like. This makes it easy to compile a take from several. You will need to change track display to playlist though.

Good luck
