Default C24 pre\'s vs. red series

Are the focusrite pre's of the same quality on the control|24 as are found in the red 1's? I'm guessing that they are not as from a price standpoint 4 red 1's would cost more than a control|24. And the control|24 is a lot more than just preamps..

I certainly like the price of the control|24 vs. Pro Control but I have a feeling i'm going to need the edit pack in the future. I'm planning towards making the move from logic to Pro Tools. ( i know its often the other way around, but i'm willing to bite the midi bullet bc i find Pro Tools easier to write in w/o getting my head too caught up in software!)

Any input is much appreciated!

No, they are more like Platinums with perhaps a little more headroom . I have the C24 and a Focusrite Red 1. The Red is tonally coloured like a Neve or ISA 215. It is a superior pre-amp but the Control 24 are fairly uncoloured and useful but not spectacular. The C24 overall is great value for money. I love it, the monitoring section is also much better than the procontrol IMHO

Hope this helps

While we're at it James.... or anyone....
If I wanted to find a single channel preamp that was BETTER than the C24's preamps...what would it be? ($1000 or below)

Grace 101?
joe Meek?

thanks...any suggestions would be appreciated...

A single channel like a Joe Meek might be a little short term. Do you need a outboard EQ/COMP in a channel strip at the moment.

I have a C24 and use mostly outboard pres for important stuff. I have a ISA430, Amek 9098 Dual, UA 2-610 Dual, Buzz Audio Dual, and a 1969 dual pre/Comp. So 9 channels of outboard pres and they all have a different color. Although the C24 pres are useful I find them pretty clean and not much color.

The Amek and Buzz can be had for just over us$1,000 and they are both good pres, and you would have 2 channels of them. I would take the Buzz first. Just try and see if you like before you buy.

If you want color a 1272 vintech seems to get good reviews in the states. There is none in Oz, and I hate to buy before I try. Although I did with the Buzz and have been happy.

I have a song that was recorded through Vintech 1272, then Apogee Rosetta, mixed in PT HD3.

Just a suggestion, I have just purchased a True Systems Precission 8 preamp. 8ch, including 2 directs and MS encoding.
Its the warmest, most precise pre I've heard, beating (comfortably) everything else here, from Graces to a vintage Neve.
try that one before you buy. In the US its distributed by Sennheisser / Neumann

I like the true mic pre but I wouldn't compare it with grace since they go for the ultra clean pre. It is however quite warm.

just my two cents...

I have both the Vintech and True Systems. I love them both. The Vintech has a more "beefier" sound and the True is cleaner tone.

With the True however, the outputs are pretty "hot". When I record drums, I usually have to stick an attenuator on the outputs, otherwise my A/D clips even with the gain at minimum.
