Default Trim tool not working?

ProTools 2021 6.0 ....

Novice here ...

I created a midi track and now I need to trim the first seconds of silence from the beginning. I am using the trim tool in both the edit window and in the MIDI editor with the same disappointing results ... the cursor does change to a bracket correctly, but I cannot sweep out the section to delete. Why? Is the track locked somehow? Are there situations when the trim tool can't be used? Does it need to be fully enabled in some way? Thanks in advance for insights.

Could be you're in Grid mode with a large grid value. Try slip mode or a smaller grid value. F1-F4 select edit modes.

It is possible to lock clips. If the clip has a little lock symbol in the corner, select the clip on the timeline and press Command+L (Mac) or Ctrl+L (Win).

Hmmm, why trim silence? Why trim silence on a MIDI track(which has no sound)? Have you set the track view to CLIPS? Knowing the purpose might get better advice

Some basics:
To use the TRIM tool on a midi or instrument track, the view needs to be set to clips. To use TRIM on an audio track, the view needs to be set for Waveform.

So that the clip starts on the nearest beat or bar, depending on how you might want to edit/copy/paste later. Neatness counts when working with MIDI on the grid.
