If you have issues, then go the clean install route. If no issues, you're done and back in business ASAP. If you are supporting a lot of machines, you will save you and your clients time and $ in the end.
FWIW I decided to go through the clean install process and only installed iLok and PT and ran into the exact same plugin hang issues. Erased and now doing a migration again since It offered no improvement

Agreed, in most cases. As machines age, they attract issues that we might sense (or not) that are tough to spot. Sometimes only a clean install will find those issues and sort it out. In most cases, however, I find a clean install a waste of time. If it doesn't feel broken, don't feel that a clean install is necessary. If, on the other hand, the OS goes through a major change, maybe consider it. Those major changes are few and far between.

Maybe look at the Sonnet Thunderbolt to pcie box? It's Avid/hdx approved.

So. I was about to pull the trigger on a MacBook Pro M1Max with 64GB RAM and 1 TB SSD. I walked into my nearest Apple store ready to plunk down over $4K USD and walk out with one of these beasts. Unfortunately the Apple store only has in stock the MacBook Pro with 64GB RAM with the 4 TB SSD for an additional $800. If I wanted one with only the 1 TB SSD, I would have to order it online and wait until late December. So disappointedly I walked out of the store empty handed. I guess the good news is I still have my money and Avid has more time to get Protools to run natively on Apple Silicon and Monterey.

Think again. You really want that extra storage. That is, if you have extra 800 to spend. It is wicked fast.

Take the money you were going to spend, buy some TESLA shares and by the time December rolls around you can buy the more expensive config.

Correct. That’s my point. It was $781 a month ago.

And idiot me telling people to buy it 3 years ago at $60 and not buying any myself. Ugh…
